Sorry I haven't been posting much lately was on vacation for a week camping. Then it takes me another week to catch up on things. A great book that I read while vacationing. Trouble Boys about Minneapolis band The Replacements. A very interesting story about a great band that really sabotaged their own career in the name of being punk or not selling out or maybe they were just all alcoholics. Minnesota beer on the side.

A good friend of mine used to put on shows by these guys a while ago and it looks like their new single's set to propel them into (something approaching) the big time. Good tune and a pretty weird video:

I haven't been this excited about a Metallica album in a long time. Their first single was good and got me excited, now this second single Moth Into Flame is probably the best Metallica song written in the past 15 years. Actually I put it at the top of the list of all Metallica songs ever written. Love this song as an average listener and as a musician (I think us musicians listen to songs differently than non musicians sometimes). Extremely well written, great melodies/vocals, just a damn good song that highlights a lot of Metallicas best qualities in one song. Amazing.

34 years ago today....
Depending on your age, you may remember the "premiere" of the Thriller video and where you watched it.

I've been meaning to pick up the first two Metallica albums on cd. Are Kill 'Em All and RTL the only ones that have been remastered to date?

Here is a great forum about different mastering versions. New masters are not always necessarily better. Also great discussions about the sound, good and bad of albums. forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/2016-metallica-remasters.506420/

One of my favorite post-rock bands, Mono, is reissuing their first album, Under The Pipal Tree, via Temporary Residence Ltd on vinyl. Just ordered the marbled green vinyl version

Flipping from sports radio to the NPR music channel, I heard the first few notes of what could only be Blues Traveller. I wonder what it's like to make music that twenty years later can still make a 43 year old man yell 'no, no, no!' while scrambling frantically to change the station.

Related music note - yesterday was Record Store Day with a bunch of limited releases. I did my part on Earth Day by driving my SUV unnecessarily all over the valley to chase down a couple rare vinyl finds. The unfortunate part of RSD is that a lot of the releases are up on eBay for 2x-3x the price.
Relating it back to denim, it would be a pretty cool concept if there was a specified "dead stock" day or raw denim day where manufacturers dropped a limited run of some ultra rare fabric. I think it happens intermittently based on anniversaries or fabric availability, but I think "Denim Store Day" could be a thing if it gained momentum. Maybe the hook is that you can only get the rare drop from a store and not online.

There were a couple of 7" releases I've been eyeballing but figured there was a cold chance in hell of nabbing either of them. I kinda knew the flippers were gonna come in and buy up whatever they could find too. that's the ultimate downside to collecting vinyl.
