Newer music still sucks compared to the classics but you gotta give em credit for being in the game this long They just announced Metallica playing the first rock show at the new, still not done, Vikings stadium. Huge fan especially pre Black album. Master of Puppets my favorite for sure. Got to see them right before And Justice For All came out and for the Justice tour 2 times. Not sure if I am going to this one. Metallica really did open the doors for other metal and hard rock bands to break through to the masses. They influenced a lot of musicians. I give them a lot of credit.

Ive never seen any of the Big Four bands. Metallica would be at the top of my list of bands to see. Love the early stuff up to the Black album

34 years ago today, we lost a great one. Gone, but certainly not forgotten. R.I.P. Randy...

That's what's great about the back catalog, i can go back and listen to the first 5 albums and live in the past. Don't think they'll ever reach the same songwriting capabilities they once had, but thats because Hetfield seems to have slightly changed his vocal style and his approach to music. Thats not a bad thing I guess. I cant realistically expect them to keep making thrash albums like other bands

Never been a big fan of Metallica but bands like them that can stick it out many times can have another creative streak.

I'm feeling a little inspired from all the talk of the day...not exactly my musical style, but definitely appropriate...
Who knew a song by The Cardigans could be all about cardigans?

WOW! I've always liked Disturbed but I've never seen them live. I've got a new level of respect.

Especially live. I have heard mixed feelings from Disturbed fans about the song. I ran sound at a Disturbed show in Minneapolis for an opening band, who were friends of mine, quite a few years ago. Disturbed sounded great. Seeing the Simon and Garfunkel version live a few years ago when they had a reunion tour was amazing. One of the great songs of popular music.

I love the Disturbed version sound of silence. I also like their latest album but that seems to be getting mixed reviews among the Disturbed fans as well.

Another sad day in music history. Well, for me, at least. When grunge first hit the scene, bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soungarden were trend setters. I enjoyed them all. But, Alice In Chains spoke to me like no other. Sadly, 14 years ago today, Layne Staley lost his battle with addiction, at the age of 34. His vocals were distinct, and we will likely never hear another like him, in our lifetimes. R.I.P., Layne....

For some reason Layne Staley's death bothered me. In most cases when a rock star has died i didnt give it much thought. With Layne it bothered me because you could see him slowly wasting away. That Unplugged performance is a good example....you can tell he's high. Definitely a gifted singer.
I do think William Duvall is a valuable edition to the new AiC lineup. He plays guitar and can sing, and since AiC has always been about dual vocal harmonies his voice goes well with Jerry Cantrell's.

I'm fine with the guy, I just don't agree with it being Alice in Chains. Full disclosure, even though he's a heck of a guitar player, I don't like Jerry Cantrell's songwriting without Layne Staley (who also played guitar, not sure if you were meaning that he didn't or just saying that the new guy also does). I was bummed because with Mad Season it looked like he was actually going to pull through it, but his wick was just burning too fast.

I've only ever seen a few pics of Layne with a guitar, but haven't seen any live performances of him actually playing. Layne's strength were his vocals and the driving force behind AiC's music imho. When Duvall came in I initially thought it was some half-assed attempt by the band to replace Layne, but Duvall surprised me because he wasn't trying to be Layne and his guitar playing, which plays a larger role, complements Jerry's playing. I don't recall Layne playing the guitar with any frequency during AiC's live performances.
My point is, a lot of die hard AiC fans counted Duvall out immediately but I think he's done an admirable job. We've all seen how changing up vocalists can be tricky to do within a band, for better or worse. Makes me think of John Bush replacing Joey Belladonna in Anthrax or Todd La Torre replacing Geoff Tate in Queenryche. Most of the times the replacement singers don't work but there will be cases where it does.

I found myself absolutely mesmerized by Margo Price on SNL this weekend.
"I killed the angel on my shoulder with a bottle of the Bulleit/So I wouldn't have to hear him bitch and moan"
(not from SNL because NBC doesn't play nice with YouTube)

RIP to the purple one. Surprised on this one, but not entirely as there are some stars that you can't really imagine aging. Prince was a concert I never had a chance to experience, but with his music catalog, I certainly hope Cirque de Soliel or another do something in Vegas (similarly to the Michael Jackson One show).
Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the iconic Chappelle Show skit - Charlie Murphy/Prince
Random - it's really not easy to find much on Prince videos or the Chappelle skit on YouTube.

Yes, RIP. Prince was a significant portion of the soundtrack of my youth. I saw this posted on Jezebel earlier--it's Prince with Winwood and Petty at the George Harrison tribute in 2004 giving a 2:45 minute guitar clinic on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Prince comes in at 3:27.
