Speaking of quality... I was very unimpressed with the shoulder pad for the early version duffle bags. It was basically a piece of rectangular leather instead of the current circular/oval shaped pad that looks like an actual pad.
Anyone have the same gripe? What did you do to get it fixed? I emailed Gustin a couple weeks ago without success. The person basically told me they don't have stock or materials to get me a better piece.

I emailed Gustin about my gripes for the original duffle bag. The strap mounting points and the pad are crappy but I love the rest.
They hooked me up with a second generation duffle which should be here end of May. I will say I like the full leather strap better than the canvas but hopefully it's at least padded well and I hope I don't have to worry about the straps ripping.

just received my first gustin chino, the #5 Navy American. They need a hem. Is there any consensus on washing first to account for shrinkage ? Or just hem them a bit long ...
thanks

Or just hem them a bit long ... thanks You should at least soak the pants to get rid of any potential shrinkage. Even when they say it's sanforized bla blah blah... My N&F duck canvas shrunk 1,25 inch in the inseam with a lukewarm soak.

If soaking only before a hem, I'd still opt for hemming 1/2 longer than you ultimately want. You'll likely get a bit more shrink during an actual wash cycle. The agitation brings about a bit more shrink than a non-agitated soak.

I just wash them as I would be in the future. Then have them hemmed.

Logistics. Saving $6 here...$6 there it adds up. Very dumb IMO. I would order simple wallets if I wasn't paying 20% of the purchase price in extra shipping.

Does anyone have experience with #11 Standard (Cone Mills 12.5oz 100% organic selvage)? I picked up a pair from ebay last week. I finally got my size right! So these are my first wearing pair of Gustins. Hooray!

Sending them an email about it (sheesh, sending them a lot of email this week), but I washed my American Sixteeners for the first time (had an unfortunate run-in with a flooded window well surrounded by mud), and the top-side of one of the rivets popped off of the coin pocket. I'm thinking I'll just put a copper rivet through it because wabi sabi.

Yeah mine popped up at the same location on Zim 18s right after the first soak. I got a few in the mail as well.

Gustin is good with sending rivets. Get a denim simple wallet with them!

Hi guys, not sure what threads t post this in. I bought 2 pair of Gustins, American 16(?) and japanese classics. My girlfriend washed the Americans after 2 wears which broke my heart. The Japanese I have worn for nearly 5months now. All weekend, and about 3-4 times a week for a couple of hours on the bike...my dilemma is, after 5 months, there isn't a single fade. I was under the impression that if I wore the crap out of them without washing them, that the fades would kick in before they were washed? Sorry, this is my first experience with selvedge. I really have no idea what I'm doing. I'm about to buy a couple of pairs of IH, just wondered if I'm supposed to soak the Gustins or keep wearing or whatever. I've managed to get indigo stains on my natty CxL semi dress, so there's plenty of indigo there, just need to know if I should soak, wash, wear etc! Sorry for the rookie question, just getting impatient with the evolution!

I find that heavy sweat & HARD wear facilitates fades. Be aware that IH designs different jeans in its range to have different evo/fade potentials/results....fantastic jeans, imo, though. Similarly, different denims have differing crocking/indigo bleeding characteristics. I wash heavy crockers. Soaking & washing is up to personal preference but always wise to wash denim & workwear inside-out. I'm 'old school' and feel just wash 'em when they're dirty.

Thanks for that. I was just hoping for a bit of evo by now. I've put them in the freezer a couple of times to kill the germs, but otherwise have worn them pretty hard. I will give them a few weeks and probably just wash them and see what happens.....thanks again mate,

Honestly they are your jeans do whatever you want. We are in 2015. We have running water, detergent, driers (I don't use it for jeans), capabilities to hem jeans. If you are pouring sweat into your jeans please wash them. Wearing your jeans, hard work and sweat will do much more for fades than washing your jeans will.
