Error across the entire production run of momma Zimbs. Not sure if all the Zimbs were made in the same factory, but the factory used the brown patches for them instead of veg tan. When you say Momma Zimbs do you mean the 18-oz? Cuz that's what I'm talkin 'bout. I couldn't remember any mentions of the veg tan patch mix-up on the Zim18, but maybe I just missed them in the chorus of discussion about the 15-ouncers. Nah, I mean the Zimb 15s, because that's what I received, and Ren told me about the error at the factory. I have no idea if the Zimb 18s were made in the same factory as the Zimb 15s, but the Zimb 18 page definitely says Veg Tan, so they probably were.

I just mailed my Zimb 15s back to get the patch fixed. Funny thing, I was just in SF the last two days for work. My hotel was about 6 blocks from their office! I thought about seeing if I could just bring my jeans by, but their website says that visiting day is on Wednesday. Also my work schedule was crazy busy. I didn't have time anyway. I hope it doesn't take too long to get them back.

Hey, highlights et al with the Zim18's: did you get the standard brown patch or the veg tan? Mattbert, the Zim18's came w/ standard brown patch, brah.

Mine came with brown patch as well. I think I'm going to ask for the Veg Tan patch.

I got my Zim 18s today. It's my first pair of Gs. I sized up one (33 Straight) and they fit perfectly. The fabric is quite stiff and starchy and I love the feel and texture of it. It doesn't feel as heavy as I thought it would. They are comfortable right off the bat, or I'm too used to the pain caused by 21oz Unbranded's fabric and (mis)fit. Here's a pic with the Classic Belt and Japan Khaki WS.

marauder that is a really great fit.. For some reason the fit seems more like a slim than a straight from the knee down in a good way..

These are serious indigo bleeders. I wore them for a day and my shoes, shirt, belt and hands were all indigo.

The first run of Zimbs was my first pair of gustins. I loved them so very dearly, but I had to send them back since they were too big since I didn't size down at all. Damn damn damn... If they come back, or if anyone is looking to dump off Zimbs, Zimblites, or King Zimbs in a 35 or 34 Slim, challah atcha boi.

Imgur album with additional images and higher-res versions of these is HERE. One big, happy, long-staple family: Detail on the ZimLites: Detail on the King Zims (they're just gagging for a chunky veg tan patch):

Mattbert, I may have asked you this before but which pair do you like better, Zim Lights or NIxPs?

The pictures I saw look very much like regular open weave indigo jeans. Never touch or see a pair in real life, so I have no experience.

Have you washed the lites? Or were they that much lighter in shade from the get-go?

Mattbert, I may have asked you this before but which pair do you like better, Zim Lights or NIxPs? Gotta go with the NIxP. The ZimLites have that amazing feel to them, as you'd expect, but my shallowness wins out here because the look of the NIxP is pretty special in my book.

Matt, what are so special about Zim in feel? The pictures I saw look very much like regular open weave indigo jeans. Never touch or see a pair in real life, so I have no experience. The outside feels like you're wearing Kevlar body armor, and the inside feels like you're wearing soft lightweight flannel pajamas. I have a friend in LA who got to bust his Zims out for the first time all winter the other day, and as he said at the time: "Zimbabwean cotton. If you know what I mean, then you KNOW what I mean." I know this sounds like I'm just evangelizing for Gustin, but it's all about the fabric here. I do like the fit on my G Zims and the construction on them is solid, but that's really beside the point. What makes these jeans so incredible is the material itself; I'd say the same about anyone's jeans made from this stuff.

I'm not feeling the fabric like you describe but perhaps that's due to the fact that I just got them yesterday and they are very stiff and starchy. After a cold soak, it may be a different story.

Have you washed the lites? Or were they that much lighter in shade from the get-go? They are unwashed. The photo makes them look a little bit lighter than they actually are, as does the fact that they're posing next to the darker Mama and Papa Zims. But yes they are certainly on the lighter end of the spectrum for indigo denims.

Which actually brings up a good question. Are the three weights of zimbs from Gustin from the same mill? Who knows if it's even possible to answer.

Yeah, the Zim18s are significantly stiffer than the other two. The Zim15s were the perfect goldilocks happy medium between stout and comfortable, and the ZimLites had some nice crispness to them but felt fully broken in the first time I ever put them on - like I'd already owned them for years. The Zim18s are at the other end of the scale. They exude more of the body armor characteristics, but I could feel them starting to give in during the first full day I wore them (like you, also yesterday). And the inside/weft definitely feels soft; it just can't behave softly yet because of the weight and stiffness of the warp. I reckon you're exactly right about the soak. My Zim15s were a very different experience after losing a bunch of starch in their first soak. To be clear, I think 15-oz is the sweet spot for these. That's where the material is, in my view, perfectly in balance. The others emphasize one of the aspects of the 15-oz and tilt the scales somewhat. The 10-oz amps up the comfort at the expense of a bit of durability, and the 18-oz amps up the durability at the expense of a bit of comfort (that's what I'm expecting anyway; the 18-oz may turn out to be very comfortable as well once they're broken in). For now, I reserve the 'mithril' moniker for the 15-oz and only the 15-oz.

I'm considering soaking my Zimb 18s because I want to have them hemmed and I'd rather get any shrinking done sooner than later. Did anybody soak theirs and experience any type of shrinkage? They seem so tightly woven that I can't imagine them shrinking much, and if that's the case then I'll just have them hemmed pre-soak.

I hot soaked my regular Zimbs for about an hour and let them air dry. Very little shrinkage (I was hoping for more).
It did manage to get rid of the hip bulge, so that's a big plus. I am assuming it has something to do with washing the starch out.

So I went for it and hot soaked my Zimb 18s for an hour, and now I'm wearing them dry (yay standing desks). They did shrink, especially in the waist, but since I sized up they shrank from 35 to that perfect, barely button-able 34 for me. They should wear in perfect. They also shrank enough that instead of double large cuffs I can now wear them stacked.
Total win, super glad I did it. I had worn them exactly 15 times previously, including skateboarding a few times, and I can see that my baby fades still match up with the current creases reforming in the top block.

I am assuming it has something to do with washing the starch out. I did a cold wash/hang dry on mine and got quite a bit of shrink in the inseam (I'd say 1 to 1.5") but very little elsewhere. And yeah the drape definitely changes if you get rid of some starch.

I'm glad to hear that because I'm planning to do the same with mine before too long. I'm a tweener in Gustin's sizing, right between a 35 and 36, and my Zim18s came in right on spec for a 36 so the waist is just a smidge on the loose side for me. I may try to hot soak the top block and very quickly cold soak the rest, though, because they are essentially perfect from the thighs on down. Thanks for the report.

Head's up if anyone is still thinking of "repatching" their zimbs (repatch? what is this, sons of anarchy? lol)
I spoke to Ren yesterday. The factory claims that only the 18s were supposed to have the veg tan patch and only the 18s were sewn up out of spec. The lites and 15s were spec'd to have a brown patch.
If you have a lite or 15 and are still after a veg tan patch, I would contact Ren again before following the advice previously posted in this thread.
