I see a ton of love for the Alden's, Red Wings, etc. - I've been seeking out something crafted and outside of the box - if I'm spending the money to invest in a great pair of Alden's, I think I may spend a little more and opt for Viberg : Viberg Boot StoreI'm open to other brands, this one caught my eye. Let's enlighten each other to brands that have entered the market and help make the world a better-dressed place.

It all depends on what you like. If you like stuff you can wear to the office with slacks, and want to spend serious $, get on a list and get a pair of shell Alden wingtip boots. Go Viberg if you can sport the woodcutter look at work. If you want to split the difference, look for a pair of English country brogues such as Crockett & Jones or Tricker's.
Personally, I have a work goal, that when met, I will pull the trigger on a pair of shell Alden's.

I currently have a pair of roughed leather Cole Haan chukka's and a wing-tip style Aldo (yes, Aldo) pair of boots that have been my dominant pairs of late (in the brown category). I try to do as much outside the box thinking with shoes, but quality is what makes the difference.

As Stinky asked it does depend on what you are looking for and budget. Both of these have rubber vibram type soles. I have a pair of Black Red Wing Beckmans. Around $300. I like these as they are a little dressier than my Whites. I have a black pair of White's Semidress Boots. Around $450 depnding on options. WhitesbootsBakershoeYou have to order them unless you can find a stock pair for sale. You can order from Whites and also Baker. They do sell on Ebay new and used. I found both pairs of mine on the Bay for a great price. A necessity as my tastes are more expensive than my income. They are one solid boot. They are lined unlike the Beckmans and have a taller heel. They are a lot heavier than the Beckmans and as I stated not as dressy. They are more rugged but they still are very good looking and will last forever. All pics are stock internet pics.

For anyone reading who may not be familiar, White's is the manufacturer. They will take orders direct, but keep in mind they are the manufacturer and not really set up for customer service. Baker (linked above) is a boot shop with a physical storefront as well. Kyle is the man over there. They have outrageous customer service and a lot of pull with Whites. I recommend anyone interested work with Kyle at Baker. He'll help you get your size right and work with you on all the options. I have 3 pairs of Whites: Semidress, Smoke Jumpers (logger boots) and Nomads (engineers.)

I agree 100%. I own a pair of Nomad's, and semi dress. Bought them through Baker's, and dealt with Kyle on any questions. He know White's inside and out. Can't beat their fit guarantee, and free shipping. Highly recommend!

I'm checking out Shoe Healer now...great looking boot/shoe options...decisions. Like Roman, Richard (shoehealer) is active on many forums and goes way out of his way to answer questions. Sign up for the newsletter and IIRC, he sends you a coupon for 10% off your first order. If you are looking at the Stow or Burford, those are on the 4497 last and you have to order them somewhere between -1.0 and -1.5 your US size. The trickers boots on sierra trading post are on a different, more TTS last and you should order -0.5 to -1.0 your US size. Frankly, you can't go wrong with any of the boots that have been recommended in this thread. Whites, Viberg, Tricker's, etc. will all last a lifetime if taken care of, it's just a matter of personal taste. I absolutely love the Whites, but I just don't look that good in them. Another good resource for boots is END: www.endclothing.com/department/boots. Personally, I would recommend avoiding the India-made Grensons. Julian has had good luck with them, but he has the leisure of inspecting them before purchase, and/or can return them easily. They are very hit and miss. The "skin to box" Northampton Grensons are a different story. The Sanders are good quality and a little less expensive--I believe that Mark McNairy and Oliver spencer sub out their boots to Sanders. I wanted a pair of the Burgundy Burnished & Green Trickers that just went up, but missed the boat as they had sold out my size. Happy boot hunting!

Viberg Service boot is right up my ally but I will NOT spend $7-$800 on a boot when I can grab White's for half the price. White's to me is the best bang for your buck when it comes to looks & being a shit kicking boot. Would I love to own a pair of Vibergs...100% but its White's for now

They're definitely on my boot bucket list as well.

I am a sucker for Wolverine 1000 miles boots. Same here. Although there are any number of boots of a similar look and style, there's nothing that quite strikes me in the way that the 1000 Mile boots do. Love them. BTW, if anyone ever needs any English/Northampton made boots sent over, just let me know - happy to help as it'll avoid the stupidly high shipping costs the shops seem to charge and I can also mark them as a gift.

Ditto on Wolverine 1000 Mile.. I've got the #8 Chromexcel and I wear them more than any other boots I have. Soft and comfortable right out of the box. The soles are starting to wear through, though, and I've only had 'em a bit over a year. A hole has made its way through the first layer on the bottom and the insole has curled and is also going to need to be replaced soon. I don't think they can last 100 miles on good care and maintenance alone. I like my 744 LTD Shell Cordovans more, but don't wear 'em as often 'cause I'm trying to preserve them and can't bring myself to wear 'em as hard as the leather boots. If you can afford it, I'd get Shell Cordovan.. if you can find them, the 721 LTDs look better than the 744's, in my opinion. There are some major differences between shell cordovan and leather boots which I'm sure most of you already know or have been compared in great depth. On the not so obvious or mentioned side, I find leather boots have a stronger leather smell and are "moister" overall. Anyone have a good method for deodorizing boots? -\Visdom

Thanks for throwing out that offer of Julian. I have done it myself, getting an item sent to you whether from Ebay or retailer then reshipping and marking as gift or lower value on International shipping to save duty/shipping. If there is an interest in this maybe we would have a thread somewhere on the forum. There of course will have to be good communication/trust going on to do this. I still have my Ace belt buckle that I ordered back in the day. Kiss/Ace fan still. Welcome to the forum. Yes, Julian, I second the thanks. As a lover of boots from Northampton, I appreciate the offer immensely. As I've said before, happy to reciprocate and ship things to you when it can save you some cash.

I have a pair of shell #8 Rancourt & Co. Blake boots, and they are gorgeous and tough as nails. I don't baby them... I wear them to work building antennas and climbing buildings, I wear them casually too. Always look good!

wisdom - that's one of the downsides with the 1K mile boots, IMO, they never look as good again as when you first take them out of the box. They look different, and can grow more interesting, but they never look quite as beautiful as when they're brand new. @winterland - wear that Ace buckle with pride! One of the most memorable music related moments of my life was waiting outside the Hammersmith Odeon back in 1988 and getting to shake hands with him. Not that he would have noticed... 'Space' Ace indeed. @everyone else - no worries re. the shipping offer. I have a Post Office literally within 2mins walk of my house so it's never a problem to cart stuff up there and send it out. Postage to the States is actually fairly cheap and quick if done by private individuals. Much the same as the costs the other way, I think the shops price it so high simply because they don't really want to bother doing it.
