$259 for outsourced sneakers? How much for a waterskiing shark? You'd have to ask The Fonz™

So for the logistics part... Someone already pointed out that the Horween (and possibly others) leather needs to be shipped to Italy. Assuming the Horween has the longest lead time... Once the campaign gets funded, Gustin has to order the leather, and Horween delivers. That takes a bit of time. If Horween/Gustin ship by sea (most likely), that could take a month (maybe that includes time for customs). That would make it 2 months round trip just for shipping. I assume the manufacturer makes the shoes all at once. So around a month for ordering the raw materials. ~2 months for shipping. ~2 months for actually producing the shoes. Sounds about right? They could quite possibly be piggy-backing on other orders for Horween hides being shipped to IT. If they didn't, that's indeed dopey. I can't imaging Gustin having a large enough order to make that a smart move. But I just don't care = the price and size charts are not something that I am comfortable with, and really, they look generic as hell - what is do unique there? Just the Horween hides?

I think it's interesting the highest and lowest priced are moving along. I don't know if anyone here is taking the plunge but I may go in on the white lows. I wish they had the burgundy lows (non horween).

I'm calling the high-end bluff here and now. Are there really tons of peeps out there willing to wait that long and pay almost 3 bills for a pair of Horween/Gustin kicks? Maybe I'm wrong...

Find a good sale and iron rangers are cheaper than the horween sneaker (and also made of horween), but that sort of misses the point. Based on their typical markup for Essex and Dublin, I'm not gonna be buying a Gustin shoe. I can almost go in on the black high or white low, but there are experienced shoe manufacturers shipping similar product for less that are also made in Italy or Portugal that I can try on and wear today, if I want.
In other words, a little bummed at the Gustin offering. If they started at 100 they'd be a no-brainer, in my opinion, and I'd easily pay 160 for the horween, but can't justify the $100 markup when greats is doing the same thing (probably out of the same factory) for less money, and isn't increasing the carbon footprint of my shoe by shipping horween hides to Italy. With how this has lined up, the rancourt easily takes the win (like Germany over the Ivory Coast yesterday), and i'll be keeping an eye on their future offerings.

Not sure I understand why there is so much hating on the G shoes. I thought the prices landed where I expected them. I understand that plenty of you insist on US made and I can't argue that so I guess this is more about the prices.
I did some research over the weekend to see what was out there for competition and the only thing I can complain about is the painful lead time and that I can't afford the CXL high tops (yet). Here's what I found… Common Projects are twice as much and I believe are made in Italy/US. Buttero are twice as much and made in Italy. Frye comes in at similar same price points, but less attention to craft on the lower end (no 360º stitching on the bumper) and overall leather selection. Upside they're made In USA and no lead time. Rancourt (after June 17 pre-sale) will be $250-$265, but made In USA and marginal lead time. Even white leather Chucks retail for $125.
I'm not saying everyone should drink the Gustin kool-aid and immediately back their shoes, but I really don't think they are being ridiculous in their offers. Hell, I struggle with the cost of any of these designer leather sneakers when I could get leather boots for not much more, but I have to remind myself that it can take as much labor and leather to make a high top sneaker as it does a pair of boots.
To each his own I guess. Just thought someone should weigh in on the other side of this lopsided thread.

Everyone is entitled to post here. "Hating" is what - not agreeing with you? Maybe now that you broke the ice, others will chime in with support of the G kicks. I only do what I want - don't rightly care about what others think/do. So always post up your 2¢ here!

Are there that many male nurses? Who else would buy that white hospital shoe? Horrible.

On the topic of hating. The low tops are an easy target. Padded tongue, leather liner, the after thought of a heel cap. They look naff, hot and cheap. Would definitely not buy even if G had sales. I really don't see any reason to even consider them over CT70's or Vans and the fact that PFF are now available in a US made option just kills these.

Converse leather can be had new from Ebay for $35-$50 and this is my source for new Converse every now and again.
Granted, they are not as nice looking, and you have to pay some more to get Jack Purcelss, like 85 but now you get some pretty nice shoes with good comfort.
The Gustins looks more premium both in materials and making, but do you really need premium sneakers? I am kinda clean but all my sneakers always gets beaten to look kinda sloppy very fast because of the white bit outer part of the lower. If I pay premium I want them to look premium, and for this price Id rather get a shoe that is known too look good for long like clarks that looks stellar from start to finnish.
I can understand how one wants wear on shoes, but I cannot see a sneaker with rubber looking better and better? Its almost a waste with horween imho, but yeah why not use them sparsly...but then again...what is the point of nice aging leather then?
Fashion product, and not for me.

I wasn't intending to hate on them, I'm just disappointed at the things I think Gustin should have tried harder for. Obviously work boots aren't the same as sneakers, so comparing directly to the cost of boots doesn't gain much. I think they should have tried harder to keep their made in the USA ideal, especially after seeing the price. As competitors to common projects, though, I think they've knocked it out of the park, but I wasn't in the market for those in the first place, and don't really look at any $400 sneakers. At that point I'd rather get something more versatile in a dress boot, work boot, or Oxford style.
I'll still consider them for boots or oxfords when they expand the line, but I think I'm out on sneakers. These just don't make sense for what I need in my wardrobe.

And all that said, I'd still consider the black high top. So maybe it's all moot. But I think they're a decent value in the nappa leather, not so good in the horween. I guess I sort of forgot about those in my horween disappointment.

Way off besides the white lows that are still way high. Common Projects, Fryes or Buteros are all insane.
Outsourced No half sizes No wide sizes Unknown currently in quality of construction IE: stitching and glue. Problems like Fryes had. Price is just way high.

I'm very disappointed in Gustin's price point and for outsourcing the sneakers. The primary draw of Gustins were good(if not outstanding construction), made in the USA and great value. They've lost at least 2 of their primary draws. 6 months of waiting for sneakers of unknown sizing and construction is not a very good deal.

IMO, sneakers have always been for toolin' around the house or neighborhood, chasing the dog in the backyard, running with my daughter on the playground, etc. That's why I just look for sneakers that are comfortable, look cool, and are (relatively cheap). I could never justify or understand the desire to spend $100+ or $200+ on sneakers. I try and save that kind of scratch for a good pair of jeans, some new boots (like Iron Rangers), or whathaveyou.
I mean, they're sneakers for God's sake. You slip them on and run to the grocery store or head out to have a few beers with friends on a patio some place. If you get some grass stains on 'em or you spill some beer on 'em then no big deal. But with these G sneakers, holy crap would I be pissed if I scuffed them up or had them get stepped on.

The same way you see sneakers, people see the same way with denim and boots, that they're denim and boots for God's sake, and don't mind ruining them no big deal. Does this blow your mind?

Good point devastitis - to each his own. There's a reddit page for sneakerheads and people spend thousands collecting air jordans - more shoes than they will ever be able to wear. Same as me with jeans - too many pairs but I still buy more

Okay, I had heard about Common Projects, but never actually checked what they look like. Now that I have, the G shoe is just a facsimile. Weaksauce. Even the dumb heel tab.
So I guess this means their boots will be an exact Alden 403 copy for less money, made in Italy?

The fact that people talk about G like it's a premium brand is odd. Take the denim, for example. There is no real craftsmanship to speak of, and the variety in fabrics is the only interesting selling point for the brand. I like my Gustin jeans, but aside from the fabric, there is nothing interesting about them. I can't imagine the sneakers will be any different, and yet people continue to put G on a pedestal. It's one thing to say "I like Gustin's products because they are relatively inexpensive and the variety in fabrics is appealing", but to discuss Gustin in the same breath as other premium brands is baffling. As far as I can tell, Gustin wants people to believe it is a premium brand with its line of expensive leather sneakers, and perhaps the sneakers are a departure from its denim, shirts, etc., all of which are rather average compared to entry-level brands like Lawless and N&F.

Gustin has been doing facsimiles for a while now, i.e. CPOs/briefcase, the selling point being at a much lower price. Have you seen the prices of the CPs?
