I've been wearing my Red Wing Iron Rangers all over Europe for the last few weeks. They are doing great. I'll take photos and post. I think these ones use an oiled leather. When I get home I'd like to show them a little love by cleaning them up and re-oiling, or whatever is the proper care. What do people on here recommend? Maybe I should just take them into Red Wing? Is it true that that do free leather treatments/polish in their stores? Thanks That would be cool if they did but I haven't heard that. I brush regularly and oil with Obenauf's (not the LP which has wax in it)

i believe redwing stores are primarily franchised, so services like cleaning/oiling do exist but are likely programs implemented by the local franchise owners and not something across the board (ie check with your local redwing store)

Polish your work boots with dirt. Then add more dirt. To be fair, I use AE cream when mine look dry, but that's it. They're not getting polish or dye ever.

I basically do my iron rangers once a year with coconut oil. Horsehair brush when really needed to get mud off etc.
I use snow seal on my LL bean snow boots.

I'd worn them a few days before this trip, maybe 5. But they hadn't previously experienced long days of repeated wear with many miles of walking, rain, etc. These boots have conformed to my feet to an amazing degree. Thanks for the info on recommended care. I'll show them some love when I get back to the USA.

I got the wrong size so I had to send them back. I learned my lesson and the next day went down to the Red Wing store and had them measure me, definitely go at least a size down from normal tennis shoes. My new shoes should be here tomorrow and I can't wait. Also my local Red Wing store does free shoe care so I would definitely go down and talk to them.

Tennis shoes are vanity sized in the opposite direction from things like the waist so that everyone can feel like they have tiny waists and giant feet. I wear a 10-10.5 in Nike, 8.5 in red wing.

Here's my new oxblood IR 8119s, shown with the Hawthorns and Amber Harness. I'd have preferred a more purple shade for the 8119s, but when next to my burgundy leather jackets they're a good match. The grippy 430 sole is a big improvement over the cork.

wdw I love IRs. Those look great and I'm glad to hear the soles are better. The cork soles are death traps in snow

death traps in the rain too. i grabbed the oxblood beckhams instead of the IRs...not sure if I made the right choice.

I don't think I've ever even worn cork soles in rain, but I've fallen over a couple of times wearing leather soles in rain, so I never buy leather now.

I have the black Beckmans, and the soles on those aren't all that great either. I found myself slipping and sliding all winter, and when the soles got wet, it had zero traction in places like malls and restaurants.

I love both pair but they are both slippery on ice. There are worse. Leather as mentioned. I don't know if there is anything besides soft winter boot soles that grip decent on ice. My Doc Martins are better come to think of it.

It's definitely the rubber compound more than the tread that gives you grip on ice, vibram has some compounds that don't get slippery in freezing temps but you find those compounds on brands like north face. I always thought it was crazy how the old doc marten lug sole was so remarkably grippy, but once temps hit freezing they might as well be leather on a smooth surface.

The Austin store will send any size they can get their hands on to your house for free. I did that last year when I bought my first pair of IRs.

What coupon code do you have to use to get 40% off? 40% is in store, 25% with DECBC15 online. The trick is that the stores can get you anything BB sells at 40% off.
