I find the "factory outlet" models very deceptive. Items from J.Crew Factory are not the same as the J. Crew main line. It may look the same but is made specifically for the site to sell at the price they are selling it. They can say compare at etc. without it ever have sold at that price. So buyer beware.

I wasn't talking sbout factory. I was talking about the Wallace and Barnes CPO on clearance. $88.
The CPO and wool burgundy over shirt are the same exact measurements. Cut is the same. Over shirt has pockets.
I might snag a medium to just put away and save incase I ruin my current one!

I don't know how they are less then forthcoming.
Jcrew and jcrew factory stock completely different items and the websites are not linked with completely different URLs.
Labels are also similar but with one main difference all factory items will have two diamonds under the R on the neck tag.
Cuts and fits are basically the same for many items.
The link above for the plaid CPO is a wallace and barns item only sold at jcrew not at JCF.

It seems the members here are more about style, quality and fit than price. I don't have a problem with cheap clothes as long as you know what you're paying for. A lot of people don't realize what they're getting from most outlet stores. www.buzzfeed.com/sapna/customers-finally-aware-that-most-outlet-merchandise-is-now

many larger retailers are starting to run completely separate 'factory' lines. i'm not terribly offended by it when they're fairly transparent about it. (different labeling, different websites, different country of origin, can't return one product line to the other store, etc). it would be a different story if they were actually indicating that the products weren't a different line.

Jcrew factory is a great place to buy cheaper clothing. It's very reasonably priced. Fabrics and construction are a step down in aspects. But that is basically well known for years in the style community.

I will say I would have never known that the products from Jcrew Factory and Jcrew are different if not for the internet forums. I am sure many aren't aware.

I wouldn't say jcrew is to blame for the misconception. Outlet shopping has always been a little different. Jcrew and jcrew factory are separate. Just like banana republic, gap or nordstroms vs nordstroms rack.

Other than some vested interest why would any consumer defend them. At the very least they take advantage of the uneducated.

Regardless of whether factory is worth a damn or not, I'm gonna say the waxed cotton Barbour-looking coat I got from j. Crew factory is tops. Probably could have gotten away with a smaller size, but the construction is spot-on, it's lined and warm, and kept me dry in the rain. Not looking for too much more from a $100 waxed cotton parka.

Jcrew factory is far from garbage. Materials are very close in quality on some items, fits and cuts are identical from what I have seen. Construction is a little lower. More blends and suits aren't constructed to the same standards.

Picked up this plaid cpo last night for $59. It was marked $119 and the store had all sale items at 50% off. I did hear one guy there say that not all stores were doing 50%, but it may be worth checking your local store. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but it is a very nice heavy wool cpo for the price paid. Link

after wearing it all day my only complaint is that the cuffs are too small. when wearing with a long sleeve shirt the cuffs are pretty snug over the other sleeves. that said...the rest fits very well and it is very warm and quite good at blocking wind.

The cuffs are my only gripe with my J Crew CPO as well. I have to take off my watch to get the CPO off. But I love it. Wear it over my button downs on chilly days. I wear a Minus 33 thermal under it on cold days, and a J Crew Thinsulate Dock Peacoat over it only on really cold days.
