When I hear the term "classic Rock" I automatically think of the radio format and how they have beaten so many good songs into the ground, and pigeon holed a lot of good artists. It's cool to know younger people are searching out the roots just like I did. Hopefully after they listen to revolver they keep going deeper.
I've heard good things about the recent Bob Seeger album and tour.

Ok here is a video from a Minneapolis band Thee Massacre that I recently recorded an E.P. for. The band is actually comprised of some very good musicians. I was very impressed with their playing. They were well rehearsed and there was zero studio fixing/manipulating that was done. They could play their instruments. The video is very different and interesting. It is worth watching whether you like death/thrash metal or not. Enjoy! Metal has reached incredible levels of technical playing. I know there are more technical bands out there than the band in this video, just saying in general, it's pretty amazing how good the chops are. My son shares some of the stuff he's listening to with me and it might be a bit too heavy on the changeups and not melodic enough for my old ears but the playing is insanely good. Also, I really needed to see something with a drugged up, murderous sock puppet to make my day complete. Good post, Winterland.

An engineer acquaintance of mine has recorded most of their records. The label they are on Rhymesayers has put the Minneapolis brand of alternative Hip/Hop on the map. Here is another Rhymesayers artist Eyedea & Abilities. Mike Larsen R.I.P. was the rapper/singer and had a couple other cool projects Facecandy and Carbon Carousel. I was lucky and got to work with him many times. His projects were different as he liked to use real instruments and musicians as opposed to sampled/programmed beats etc. He did one Facecandy album of all improv with a band live in the studio. I was there and it was amazing. Was too bad he passed away. Here is one of his songs.

Oh yeah, big fan of Josh Homme and QOTSA. Speaking of Josh Homme, I Picked up Blues for the Red Sun/Kyuss in the early '90s. With all the stuff coming from Seattle much of which which had this introspective, tortured vibe (not hating, just got a bit repetitive) , the return to a heavy, drums and bass up front in the mix sound with heavy guitars was a huge refreshing experience.

Here is a band I just started a new album with, classic Minneapolis band Gypsy. They are also working on a documentary about their long history starting in 1969. From house band at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood to touring with many great bands including The Guess Who, King Crimson and Jimi Hendrix. Gypsy is the third rock band to release a debut double album with two National hits Gypsy Queen and Dead and Gone. Gypsy were very progressive with many epic songs that all feature amazing vocals and musicianship. Here is a song from their second album In The Garden Pt. 1&2.

In celebration of my Lawless Chambray shirt coming, a little music. I always thought this song said Chambray shirt but it is actually Cambric shirt which is a type of chambray. Close enough. I would have liked to have gone to Scarborough Fair. I saw them on tour for "Old Friends" reunion concert tour in 2003. Was amazing. The Everly Brothers who were a huge influence to them played at intermission. Simon and Garfunkel "Scarborough Fair / Canticle" I have always been a fan of their music.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt: Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme; Without no seams nor needle work, Then she'll be a true love of mine

I remember back in the day when Slug used to work at the Electric Fetus record store. Either way, it's great that they've been successful. I was more into stuff like El-P (and a lot of other Def Jux artists) as well as stuff on Stones Throw, Blackalicious, and hip hop from overseas like DJ Krush, Rodney P, etc.

Love it. So, anyone ever heard Galactics "From the Corner to the Block? Lot's of undergroundish rappers on there, I used to use that as a running mix for a long time.

I've been listening to Johnnyswim quite a bit since seeing them on Daryl's House a couple of weeks ago. Love the tiny desk concert.

If you're a fan of Nick Cave, Birthday Party or just aging misfits, 20,000 Days on Earth is pretty cool and free if you've got Amazon Prime. m.imdb.com/title/tt2920540/

I am so into NPR Dad Rock lately it's ridiculous. Can't get The National out of my head. You unconsciously like it because of the denim western shirt. For some reason I can not get into any of these modern folky IPR bands. I get bored listening to it. I do like music in that style but I will put on classic Neil Young, The Jayhawks etc. I admit I haven't really listened to a whole album all in its entirety. It's all cool though as we like what we like and I am glad people are into newer bands.

I'm sure that most of the musician folks in S&SF know the late Jason Molina. This is one of the most emotional and gut-wrenching songs I've ever heard in my life.
I could be wrong, but I think this is one of those songs that you like the first time you hear it, no matter what type of music you typically listen to.
Molina's life was way too short, but his music lives on forever.

I had never heard of Jason Molina. Very interesting. Has had quite the varied musical output. Sad to see another person done in by the bottle.
