I have always been a fan of the underground music scene that Minneapolis had in the 80's-90's The Replacements, Soul asylum, Husker Du, Babes in Toyland to Prince, The Time and The Jayhawks. The list goes on.
Husker Du always had a rawness about them. Started out hardcore punk eventually turning into great song writers and becoming more alternative than punk. They influenced many bands from Nirvana to Green Day etc. Foo Fighters always sound like a more produced Husker Du to me but not as cool.
Many shots of Minneapolis back in the day and my favorite club First avenue.

I liked Husker Du and Sugar, Bob Mould made some good music. Was also really into the Replacements. Somehow that all rolled into Sonic Youth, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Helmet and Pavement.

Bob Mould and Sugar albums are great. I saw the 94 Sugar show that was released in limited amount as a bonus to the Bsides album. You should check out Grant Hart Husker Du's drummer. He had Nova Mob and a few solo albums. Great stuff. I could go on and on about the Replacements. Great albums. I was so into Sonic Youth. Daydream Nation wow. Goo and Dirt also amazing. Was into Helmet but never really locked in with the others. Great appreciation for Fugazi and their dyi attitude. Need to revisit Pavement again.

Yeah, Daydream Nation was just a huge discovery for me. Pavement was a spectacle live, Spiral Stairs was a trip. Stephen Malkmus has done some okay solo stuff and his side project Silver Jews is worth a listen.
Early Replacements stuff was a huge find for me too, there was so much going on with them. Big Star was great too. All of that stuff sort of came back to me with Wilco many years later.

I was just showing my son the LPs I have left as he didn't believe I had a few things we both like on old vinyl (he was looking for Hell Awaits lol). I came across some Sonic Youth and Husker Du from the SST days. Crazy. You guys are taking me back.
I can't get into this thread or I will never get OUT of this thread.

I'm a huge music guy, both as a musician (have played bass in a number of forgettable original and cover bands over the past 20+ years), and as a devoted listener, writer and podcaster. Yes, I'm still that guy who makes year end lists and does mixes and such. If you guys are on Spotify, here's Vol. 1 of my year end mix from last year, Spotify has made me slack about doing downloadable mixes and I only do a half dozen or so burned copies now. Times have changed... 2014/1Tracklist: 01. Teenage Wasteland ~ Wussy 02. Life of Sin ~ Sturgill Simpson 03. This Is The Ballad ~ Old 97's 04. What Color Is Blood ~ Parquet Courts 05. Inside Out ~ Spoon 06. Transgender Dysphoria Blues - Against Me! 07. Fantasy Fools ~ The New Pornographers 08. California (Cast Iron Soul) ~ Jamestown Revival 09. To Love Somebody ~ Lydia Loveless 10. The Big Time ~ Bobby Bare Jr 11. Master Pretender ~ First Aid Kit 12. Another Night ~ The Men 13. Red Eyes ~ The War On Drugs 14. Til He's Dead Or Rises ~ Drive-By Truckers 15. Alexandra ~ Hamilton Leithauser 16. Wish Me Luck ~ Chuck Prophet 17. Falling Rain ~ Reigning Sound 18. White Gardenias ~ Justin Townes Earle 19. Hundreds of Ways ~ Conor Oberst

Nice list. I want to like WoD, but still prefer Kurt Vile to anything they've done without him.

I will say that "Arms Like Boulders" (with KV) is the best thing either has done IMHO. Such a great song, but "Red Eye" on that newest War On Drugs album is close.

Can't tell you how awesome it is to see people posting "I love The Replacements"....honestly, its the only thing that prompted me to post anything about music. If you ride with the Mats, you ride with me, haha.

Ok here is a video from a Minneapolis band Thee Massacre that I recently recorded an E.P. for. The band is actually comprised of some very good musicians. I was very impressed with their playing. They were well rehearsed and there was zero studio fixing/manipulating that was done. They could play their instruments. The video is very different and interesting. It is worth watching whether you like death/thrash metal or not. Enjoy!

Don't get a lot of talk but I loved them and they are going to be touring again starting in Europe.

Saw them open the bill when Kiss played at Finsbury Park in London... almost 20 years ago now, scary. Did you guys over there here about/see L7's infamous performance on the UK TV show 'The Word'?

I always liked L7. I listened to the Bricks are Heavy album the most. I think what Julian is referring to involved something bloody?
I'll raise L7 with from Minneapolis Babes in Toyland. Courtney Love was in the band for short period. Short period, that sounds funny after of the above reference.

Yes, from one of the band members herself! My wife and her are friends and we have been on an L7 kick lately. Contemplating going to Europe for another trip and going to see them. I always have mixed feelings though - you older guys know what it's like to see your faves as they age and sometimes it does not go well. I often wonder what today's kids will look back on, musically, and if they will have the same fond memories...or blurred memories from over-doing things

Ok I looked it up and what I was referring to with L7 happened at the 1992 Reading Festival in UK. I had never heard about that UK TV show sounds like she dropped her drawers and gave some full frontal view.

On the other hand I do go to many many shows and if it's a band I really like thier will still be something great about it. The younger generation doesn't have a lot of great new music in my opinion. Many are going to the classic band shows that our generation grew up with. They are also listening to the music of the classic bands that aren't around anymore. Not to say there isn't some good new music but hard to say if people will be listening to it 25-40 years from now.

I've got a huge music collection. I normally load the phone once a month with some favorites and some that I've never listened to. Here's a few on it now that stand out. AlterRed Flip Grater Gemma Ray Got a Girl The Grays Ian hunter
I grew up during the arena rock period and saw all the bigger shows but think that "classic rock" is overrated in the overall history of rock. Don't listen to a lot of it anymore.

for something completely different Checked it out and unfortunately I get bored with most trance type music. Not that I don't have appreciation for electronic music have been checking it out since Kraftwerk, Devo, through Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers etc. which I liked. On much of it these days, I just need more melody. I also catch myself thinking I could do that using a keyboard and sequencers myself. I know easier said than done. It's all cool though different strokes.

Don't listen to a lot of it anymore. I guess when I say classic rock and music I'm thinking everything from The Beatles, through Zeppelin. Punk, Pop, Rock, Metal, Alternative, Grunge and most all genres. Then those bands that stood out in their genre, were original and have stood the test of time. I just see many younger people reaching for those bands now because of the shortage of good new music. Probably just because it's a good music also. When a young person is throwing on The Beatles Revolver album it is new music to them.

Not to say there isn't some good new music but hard to say if people will be listening to it 25-40 years from now. I disagree with this completely: I think there is still tons of really good music being produced, some of which will stand the test of time. Also, young people are always going to listen to older music (I certainly did) along with what's new. Things are different now for sure, but also better in a lot of ways: A band now can have a whole career and not have to be dependent on a record company or the radio.
