I have haven't stopped caffeine for years and don't foresee it. Is it necessary? I take 100G on workout days, 3 days a week and drink a large latte and sometime another cup of coffee every day. Doesn't seem to cause any issues. I also drink decaf green tea in the evening. I know some people have caffeine stop working for workouts but it still works for me. Haven't had to up it.

Yeah I don't understand why you would want to completely cut caffeine out of your diet. Caffeine has several bodybuilding benefits. I've cut out coffee but still supplement with caffeine for cutting and pre workout

ickes and @winterland - it might be one of many factors of course but it's something I want to try for 3ish months I see if it matters. Caffeine has been linked to cortisol in many a study I read. I feel around the age of 21/22 ish when I started drinking coffee I gained belly fat. I'm not saying correlation equals causation quite yet. Judging by my 4TSH reading my adrenals are a little out of wack and caffeine doesn't do the thyroid any favors at all. First thing I want to see if kicking caffeine will help reboot the thyroid and get back to normal. Second caffeine has been shown to increase cortisol. Cortisol has been linked as well with stress to increase belly fat. Gonna give it a shot.

I've read numerous studies that showed that caffeine + fasted workouts were optimal for burning fat. Obviously if you take caffeine all day long, 4+ cups of coffee (or the equivalent like I was doing), you may suffer some adverse effects like fitful sleep and insomnia, but a dose or two of caffeine in the morning and early afternoon is not going to increase belly fat at all.

Caffeine will increase testosterone levels if taken pre-exercise. But caffeine has also been linked in a boat load of studies to increasing the hormone cortisol spiking cortisol levels. Cortisol is also linked to belly fat. From a 2008 international journal of sports nutrition. " Conclusion: Caffeine has some potential to benefit training outcomes via the anabolic effects of the increase in testosterone concentration, but this benefit might be counteracted by the opposing catabolic effects of the increase in cortisol and resultant decline in the testosterone:cortisol ratio." Basically it's worth the shot cutting coffee and only having green tea as a source of caffeine.

From what I've read, there's very little difference in benefits between getting caffeine from coffee and getting caffeine from green tea. Neither of them have great obvious benefits and neither of them have awful side effects. They're both just good sources of caffeine.

I don't think cutting caffeine is going to help much in cutting belly fat but hey, I could be wrong. Even the study that brentkuz quoted says in the conclusion that "....this benefit MIGHT be counteracted by the opposing catabolic effects...". It's not a definitive answer that it positively will. Most of the cutting (fat burning) supplements I've seen contain caffeine anhydrous in ample doses (200-300 mg range) because of it's ability to help with fat burning and weight loss.

My thing is my thyroid is taxed already. Boarder line hypothyroidism but not there. My endocrinologist brought up both caffeine and cortisol/ my stress level. No matter where the caffeine is from caffeine will cause a cortisol spike. If my cortisol is already spiked due to work related stress the caffeine won't help. I don't drink soda or red bull etc.
Trying to figure out the cause for the slow thyroid is my mission. Doesn't seem to be allergic nuts, berries, gluten. Cut booze a ton. White carbs have been cut a lot as well.

Odd enough my ex-roommate had a hyperactive thyroid and consumed around 7k calories a day while training. Nuts funny we had the exact opposite problems.

I haven't one rep maxed out in ages. Even flat barbell bench I haven't done since Christmas. Been doing a ton of dumbbell work in this 12wk plan.

Halfway through week four of lap two through Arnold blueprint (I repeated week 3 since I had a business trip to China and missed a few days.. and was forced to drink ridiculous amounts of alcohol).
Not sure how everyone else's bodies adapt to the routine, but weeks 4 and beyond is where my body appears to take on the most size. I deflate a bit, it seems, when I'm on the other weeks.

I'm exactly the same way, the second phase is where the results take off. It seems like the first phase is kind of a warm up for the second. I'm on my last week of my 6th go around no the Arnold Routine and I am changing it up after this. Time for a new routine after doing Arnolds for a year.

I have lost so much fat and gained muscle by following the specific carbohydrate diet. I do it because of a health condition, but the added benefit is the fat loss. I don't work out often and I've dropped from 190 to 160 and lowered body fat % quite a bit.

I went to Spain for my job. I was on a good roll with w/o and diet before the trip, but the food over there did me in. Time to re-focus.

Currently trying lower carbs see if that helps.

Some think carbs are evil. I've cut weight on 370g of carbs. #science Yes, some people do but it all depends on the type of carbohydrates you are eating and also when you are eating them. There are good carbs (sweet potatos, yams, vegetables, couscous, black beans, etc..) and bad carbs.

Some think carbs are evil. I've cut weight on 370g of carbs. #science Depends on your personal metabolism also. Us humans are all built a bit different. 190 to 160 doesn't seem like you were huge. Unless you are 5'5". 370g of carbs seems high. I know at that many carbs i would gain weight no doubts about it.

Well that also depends on the body fat %. 170 to 190 or so can look pretty damn good and big if you've got say 8% or below body fat and you're under 6 feet. No, not massive like bodybuilder massive but you can definitely have some good size at those weight ranges if your body fat is low.

That doesn't look like 180 lbs to me..... btw, I am wondering what type of "help" he is getting on the side.
