The tough thing is that the waist on every pair of jeans I own is loose, making it pretty much pointless to measure through the belt loops.
I lost around 25 lbs over the summer and all of my Gustin 36 Slims are way too big for me now. (Side note: Anyone want to buy a few pairs of Gustin 36 Slims?) I have one pair of 35 Slims (got them about two months ago from the stock store) that I have been wearing non-stop but even they are on the big side. For example, without a belt I can take them off without unbuttoning them. I can also easily fit both fists into the waist area when buttoned up.
Anyway, when I measure my waist (about an inch below belly button) without jeans on, I hit right on 35".
As for the other measurements (thigh, knee, and cuff), I would not want to go much slimmer or bigger than the Lawless 35 Slim Straight.

Congratulations on the weight loss. Now all you have to do is wait and anticipate. Waitcipate.

I have been thin all my life but as I moved into my late-30s my slacking off on exercise and appreciation of IPAs decided to have a gathering right on my lower stomach.
Got back to eating better and running regularly. Thankfully the weight (and my stomach) evaporated pretty quickly.
Left me with four or five pairs of Gustin 36s that are unwearable. Need to rebuild my collection.

jamesr, yep...sounds like you just figured it out. Size 35 is what you are, just like me.

ickes, you're size 35? Aren't you a 32 or 33 in Gustin? Man, I could never squeeze in to a Gustin 32/33, even if I ran a marathon five times a week and ate only a cup of kale every day. You're freaking me out brother!

I'm a bit concerned too, I am currently wearing a pair of 34 gustin slims that feel almost loose at this point. So I figured a 35 slim straight would be perfect, I guess we will see.

Wait, I am assuming it is only the waist measurement that is taken from your body and the thigh, knee, and cuff are from a pair of jeans laid flat.
Looking at the fit guides, that has to be how its done. Otherwise the numbers make no sense?

jamesr, yeah my GUSTINs are all 32 straight/33 slim. They all fit me tighter than they used to because I've gained weight. My quads, glutes, calves, and I'm guessing waist ( not sure though) have gotten bigger. My true waist is 35". If I were to order a pair of Gs today I'd probably go 33 straight/34 slim.

ickes, that makes more sense to me now. I have a pair of 35 Slim Gustins that are a bit big and have me thinking a 34 Slim might be a better fit now. If you keep gaining and I keep losing, we'll soon be able to trade jeans.

I have been holding back on ordering a shirt because I can't decide between the Slim L or XL. J Crew Slim L fits me perfectly.
I should probably just trust the size chart and get the XL! I just don't own anything in an XL and I don't want the shirt to be huge. My waist measures 36, chest 42, shoulders 21. That all fits XL on the size chart, right?

Makes me feel more confident in ordering the XL.

I just discovered Lawless D and would like to pull the trigger on one or two pairs of jeans.
Before ordering I would like to know more about fit.
I'm a true 30 waist size (lying flat waist aligned). I have ordered 29 and 30 slim Gustin but have not received them yet. I'm looking to buy Lawless close to Gustin straight sizing - is Lawless Straight Leg the equivalent?
Are these sanforized? Do I buy assuming these jeans stretch out 1 inch waist? Any shrinkage with inseam?
I'm leaning towards 18.5oz Kuroki and one with peach/orange ID. My eyes can't tell which one is the one with peach/orange ID. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys

Thanks guys Keep in mind that lawless does not measure the waist the same way as Gustin, or even iron heart. I haven't received mine yet, but I'm a 33 in Gustin, my actual waist (measuring tape where you wear your jeans) is almost 35, so I ordered lawless at 35. Now, if they come in giant, well, I'll need to change that, but lawless recommends you measure your actual waist as opposed to laying jeans flat. Regarding fit, if gustin straight is the fit for you, lawless straight is the most equivalent. If you're getting a shorter inseam and a tapered leg, keep in mind the taper is going to be steeper through the calves on a shorter inseam.

This may help but it's a bit difficult in that you haven't received your Gustin's yet. I have both gustin and Lawless. I wear a 33 slim in Gustin as I expect them to stretch to a 34-34.5 from the 33.5 (fit guide measure). For lawless, I ordered a 34 in the slim straight and they fit perfectly. So if you're a true 33 waist, order a 33 if you're a 34, order a 34.

Yes I read Lawless method of measuring waist however I don't have a soft tape but I compensated by measuring pair waistband aligned AND pulled tight. Interesting you went with 35 Lawless and 33 Gustin. Looks like you don't expect the Lawless to stretch out. Damn never considered the shorter inseam and steeper taper makes sense since 15" knee size is fixed for all inseam lengths. Cheers

As expected you ordered Gustin 33 (33.5 waist size) taking into account stretch of up to 1.5" which would be tight out of the bag, and Lawless 34" fits perfect out of the bag. Would you order Lawless 33 if you were to do it over again? Cheers

Tarzan - I don't think so. The 34 fits perfectly in that it's still snug but comfortable. A 33 would be way too tight on me.

Cheers My thought process was that I can shrink them down pretty easily if they are too big, and if they come in way small then I'm outta luck. I imagine they'll stretch out plenty if necessary, but the main thing is that I fit into what Gustin measures at 33.75" or so, but my actual waist is nearly 35".

Thanks mate I tell everyone this, the waist is not the main thing to worry about when sizing jeans. Its the thigh and leg. So if you are a true 33 waist BUT a 33 with LD or any other brand has a thigh that is to slim, u likely will not be able to get them up let alone buttoned. I can wear a waist that is 2 sizes to small if i really wanted to but if the thigh is to tight i wont be able to fit in a 44 waist. The key is to make sure the fit of the entire jean hits your needs. I am a 36 waist but need a 37-38 in most slim cuts but can go true to size with straight cuts
