This is exactly why my partners and I started our own biz. If I lose my job, it's a result of my own stupidity, not getting pushed out by kids. I spend so much time trying to think of what I could do and how to do it. I have many interests, but I don't want to do something everyone else is doing and hope I create a niche. Trust me, I constantly lie awake thinking of wtf I can do on my own... I've thought about this too. I'm envious of craftsman (and women) who just start doing their own thing. I keep telling myself I want to teach myself leather working but I just need to get off my ass and do it. I almost think there's no excuse for me not to given how much info there is on the internet. But, the competition is fierce and everyone is doing leather work these days

All I am trying to do nowaday is to fine tuned couple of my skills to prepare me for some consulting jobs down the road when I get old. I actually did a month of consulting work last year and the money was quite lucrative. Only downside was no benefits and stability, so I am back to a corporate desk job again. Maybe I should pick up a hobby to supplement my income.

I have been working with my hands all my life, and all its ever gotten me is a body with alot of problems, like tendonitis and bad stomach. I say go for working with your brain the older you get, you have alot over knowledge of how things work that youngsters don`t. Then do the stuff you love as a hobby - you will have more time for it and more money to pursue it.

The writing's on the wall for how much time I have left in a physical capacity before my back finally gives me the bird. That also means back to school to get an MBA which I'm not exactly looking forward to, but at least I won't have to wrestle 200lb meth heads with MMA training in the ER anymore.

I think I've mentioned this before on SS, but those of you, like me, who work at a desk all day and clack away at a keyboard should really read Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work by Matthew Crawford. Crawford is a really smart guy who basically grew up in a socal VW/Porsche garage, went on to get a doctorate at UofC, and ultimately hired to head a prestigious think tank in DC, only to quit and open a motorcycle garage. Although admittedly the prose is somewhat weak, the message is profound, and struck a chord with me. I suspect just by the nature of the group here, it will do the same with a lot of you. If you've ever been to a party and someone asks you what you do for a living, and you have a hard time answering the question in a way the other person can understand, you should read this book. I didn't go and quit my job, but I certainly took steps to satisfy the craftsman lurking within, and ultimately find balance in my life. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/Shop-Class-Soulcraft-Inquiry-Value/dp/0143117467

stinky I know what you mean. When Ii meet new people and have to explain my job. It's kinda hard to explain what I do especially working in the fuel cell industry. My gf tells everyone I build the "all-spark" like in transformers. I'm like a hybrid analytical chemist/engineer who actually works hands-on. At least I know when I go back for my masters in chem engineering, I actually can translate what I want into an actual process unlike current engineers I assist.

I'm retiring at 44, 14years left. Can't wait to get into a second career something completely different than what I do now. Bar tender, masseuse, construction. Something.

Tax payers voted into office the people that gave us a contract. Representative democracy. I've also single handedly save two lives so that's gotta be worth a few bucks!
