The most diplomatic and helpful answer is the one that was given... Measure and compare. That's the ONLY legit way to compare ANY jeans. It's not a d-bag answer, nor is it talking down to him. When someone is talking about spending $350-450 on a pair of jeans, I don't want to be responsible for giving has-assed "this is kinda like that" advice, thigh they do have a "... I quibbles" refund/exchange policy. that was my thought as well. if you gave someone basic fit advice and it doesn't pan out, that person would come back at you and give you sh*t for telling them to go with whatever fit. If you're spending $300+ on denim you'd better be damned sure you know what you're buying. Dropping $80 on a pair of Gustin wouldn't have the same effect imo. measuring and comparing is sound advice

Exactly.
Some 555's could be considered 777ish, and vice versa. It's the whole "different fabrics sew differently" and "humans sew the jeans" thing...
There is LITERALLY a different size chart for each and every single run of each and every single item.

It's the internet. Just give him a made up answer. Like talking to my lawyer of a wife around here.
You guys really enjoy making a simple thing way too complex.
This is getting to the point that you should just recommend the only way he could ever find a pair that fits is to try them on in person.
It's amazing that any of you could ever work up the courage to try unsanforized.

In another world, I ride bikes. I don't like the brand Trek, but when someone buys a Trek, it gets another bike on the road/dirt. Doesn't mean I won't make fun of it, but it's great to have another person out there riding. Same goes for every brand on this place, it brings more people into the fold. Help this foo' out, just dumb it down from the highbrow shenanigans you guys enjoy, if possible. lol. I own a Trek and it seldom gets ridden these days. The reason I bought a Trek was because many years ago I used to own a Cannondale Flying V which got stolen by my former roommate. I didn't realize it at the time but we lived in the same apartment building while I was in college and a week before I moved out my storage locker had been broken into. It wasn't until after I left that I realized that sh!t sucker was the culprit, well, because his storage locker had every goddamned tool available to man, including bolt cutters.....AND he was an avid biker. After that I vowed never to spend $1000 on a bike again and opted for my inexpensive Trek.

Even then I "sold" one to a friend and he paid me about a third of what I asked (at a massive broham discount) and just stopped paying. I still ride with him and have yet to push him into a creek. But it's coming...

It's amazing that any of you could ever work up the courage to try unsanforized. I don't know that it's complex. I personally spent and wasted a lot of money on denim that I don't wear because I didn't bother measuring and comparing. I ended up with several pairs that are either too big or too skinny. We're talking about hundreds of dollars that I could've saved if I knew what the hell I was doing. It took me 2 yrs or so to figure out my fit by measuring my jeans and following fit guides. In some cases a company's fit guide wasn't accurate so I lost out because an item was out of spec, but in others cases it worked out for me. Another thing is that my tastes evolved in that 2 yr time span. I used to think hems in the 8"-8.25" range were acceptable, but i've since changed my opinion and now think 7.5"-7.75" is to my liking (mainly because of the size of my feet). I hear what you're saying and that awhile ago it was pretty common for us to ask for generic fit advice between Gustin and whatever other brand, but I think our tastes have evolved since then and we've done more homework on sizing. Not too long ago I had the same issue with shirts, but in the last year I studied fit guides from several different companies and went from there. Now, I know what works for me and what doesn't. This is why I won't pull the trigger with some companies because the sizing info, fabric care and such are isn't as detailed as IH. I can look at IH's product descriptions and know with absolute confidence if something will work for me or not. I'm in the minority here since I own very litte IH gear but I like that they specify the fabric weight of an item, whether it's once washed and will shrink and most importantly, has a fit that will work for me.

I think part of the reason for the "no quibles" policy is that, especially for the noobs, trying on IS "kinda" necessary... And, I do indeed refuse to try unsanforized. I machine wash (70° C) & machine dry EVERYTHING, and I'm not trying to buy $450 denim "shrinkie dinks", lol. *Correction: I have some Oni Olives, but I bought them to fit pre-soak, because I don't want to play the shrinkie dinks game... So, they likely won't see water, barring some disgusting, filthy accident

The stories I could tell from my college years would frighten anyone. For example, I came home once from class and walked in on him wacking off to a porno in our living room. He also once killed a mouse by filling a glass jar with boiling water and drowning it. He then put the jar in our freezer for me to discover. Needless to say, I moved out shortly after his shenanigans. Dude was a world class pervert and horribly depraved.

My high school raised John Hinckley Jr, we actually lived next door, but after he was gone. But we also gave you Jayne Mansfield.

I'm currently in a "wash after every wear" (For MOST pieces) phase again... It's my summer habit. So, I could live with that

The forum is alive!! Bentin you're due for some IH stuff though I think... I'll strongly consider the 14oz OD in 633 fit from Self Edge. I've just slowed my acquisition of denim as I break in my Oni and RgT. I'm eying some Samurai and PBJ's too, and now throw in the 12.5oz Oni and it's gonna be a hard choice.

PIH10ANT - 22oz Sanforized Indigo Selvedge Slim Tapered Cut Jean
...very nice. I'm going to starting loaning out my IH jeans to patients in my hospital. Too little time!

I'm a sucker for cool patches and that pair has a cool one. I recently got the 25oz, and between that, the SG wavy standard and my 633 work beaters (which are surprisingly fading well) I probably won't be buying pants for awhile. The new UHF's and alpaca vests are very very high on my radar though.

Not to mention, IH, SelfEdge and Heddels all have comparison tools on their websites..... Just leading the horse to water... That's all Guess irony in not your strong suit Try this, an Inch in the real world equals an Inch in the IH world? Thought maybe u had som kind of wonder system going on since everybody is so eager to point out the otherwise so obvious. Again, ofcours i i will take measures and compare with the chart, just wanted to discuss differences/similarities between the IH jeans and other jeans, ie 3sixteen/RgT. My bad i guess, u can all go back to one post a day in which you recommend taking proper measures, the amazing IH way /Boris

There is nothing amazing about the way we measure. Though it is the way that the Japanese jean designers and factories measure, so it makes sense to us (at least), to measure exactly the same way. That way, when we create a new cut, there is less scope for disappointment when the first sample is produced. The reason we ask people to measure jeans and to compare the way we do, is because we do not have an in depth knowledge of other brands jeans styles and even if we did, there are variations between production runs and sometimes even major stylistic variations within the same lot number. If I had a dollar for every time I was asked "I am size x in Levis 501 what size would I be in Iron Heart?", I would not need to spend my time measuring jeans and creating sizing tables (which is what I spent most of yesterday doing), I'd be fishing somewhere. My first job today will be to measure the latest run of IH-555-02 that arrived yesterday because a cursory look yesterday suggests there are sufficient variations in sizing for it to warrant a new sizing chart.

At this point, you've been given every piece of relevant information that you would need to choose the best fitting pair of IH jeans for your liking. Everything else is up to you now. ----- If it's any consolation, no matter which cut you choose, I recommend going for the 21oz over the 25oz...... It's far more forgiving, and you can get more stretch. It's a slow process, but they'll be tamed with persistent wear.

Another benefit to measuring and comparing is that some companies have accurate fit guides and some don't. with jeans i've found that they can often come under spec by .5" which makes a difference. I've learned that when sizing for the waist to expect that loss of .5", so if a company lists their waist at 34.5" then it might come in at 34". This has happened to me with at least 6 pairs. This has just been my experience and isn't true among all brands.
