THanks guys. This is very helpful, but I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with these. www.weargustin.com/store/1503I'm leaning toward the hand wash cold cycle as they are very starchy. I had recently read about cotton fibers breaking down due to bending but I doubt that will be a real world issue for nearly all my clothes. I have a 20+ year old Carhartt duck jacket and the only part of that breaking down is around the cuffs from rubbing surfaces.

I talked to the guys at Blue Owl Workshop about this. They said if the denim fits like a glove or tightish, wear them for a couple weeks before cold soaking them to loosen them up a bit. That way they fit after the small amount of shrink a cold soak will get you. Removing the starch will help the jeans last longer since bending starchy fiber breaks it down. I'm doing this with my RT x BOW expeditions and my DTBs right now. The DTBs in particular are super starchy. How long do you plan on breaking in your DTBs before washing them? Mine are super starchy too, and I didn't even consider washing them. But if they'll soften up, then definitely will need to try to soak them up. I guess I plan to wear them until they stretch enough to fit after I soak them. The calves are still really tight so it'll probably be another 10 wears or so.

Ok, so my daughter decided for me when the DTBs would get their first wash. I put about 30 wears on them before the wash. They softened quite a bit and still retained all their color. I would say if you have them, go ahead and rinse them early if they aren't too tight already. They are super starchy to start and never really stretched in the calves until I washed them.

These 17's are stiff, I'm guessing there's a lot of starch that a soak will wash out (the water will be more yellow then blue) I usually wear mine for a few weeks (a good 15+ wears) then do a cold water soak for 30-45 min. Wear them another 15 times then send them out to be hemmed. Do you just cuff the extra length until that time? I was reading through this thread prior to washing some jeans today. I soaked a pair of G's, Italian with the Pink ID, that I have had for about a year and never washed. Threw in a tablespoon of the dark wash woolite and waited about 45 minutes. The water was indeed yellow and did not yield any indigo until I filled the tub up with clear water to rinse. When I squeezed them out a bit of indigo came out. I really want to do this to my G Postal Herringbone as I would prefer they loosened up a bit and smoothed out which I suspect is mostly the starch. I am on the fence about a cold tub soak or a cold no detergent short cycle front loader washing machine spin for these. I have a pair of indigo coals that are kind of starchy but I really like the look of how dark they are and they actually drape ok as is.

Do any of you guys sit in the tub with your jeans on for a first time cold soak with sanforized jeans? I'm amazed at the awesome fit of the STF pairs I've done this with and wonder if I'd get the same results doing it with my sanforized pairs as well

Question for you guys...when you soak/wash your jeans, are you turning them inside out? Inside out, or outside in, which gives the best results?

Question for you guys...when you soak/wash your jeans, are you turning them inside out? Inside out, or outside in, which gives the best results? I haven't washed my jeans in awhile but typically inside out and then hang dry. For new jeans I do a cold tub soak/hang dry and for dirty worn in jeans I machine wash cold/hang dry. I prefer machine washing because it does a better job imo. I tried doing the tub wash/soak method before and didn't think my jeans got noticeably cleaner. To each his own

This pair of GUSTIN Jutes is the first pair I've not washed. About a month now, and I love them. Hard for a week or so, but I'll see how this goes. Going to try that on my GUSTIN 21's too.

Most everyone recommends inside out especially in the washer if you are going for high contrast fades. As old26 suggested tub soaking you wouldn't think it would make that much difference. I haven't washed any of my indigo jeans in the washer but have my selvedge shirts which I turn inside out.

Im thinking of cold soaking the bottom half of my Japan One Sevens and Blue 17's. The waist on both comes out to 34" which is perfect. My Indigogene denim came out to a 33.5" waist and they were a bitch to get on & off

I soaked the legs of my Jutes, leaving everything from the crotch up dry. Worked perfectly.

Will hot soaking sanforized denim yield some shrink? I want to hot soak the top block of my N&F jeans to get them to shrink a little more. Since i lost weight my LHT's are loose in the waist which is annoying. Don't wear them much because of this

My wife washed a pair of N&F in warm water and hang dried them and they shrank a couple inches in length and 1 in the waist

Yeah, I always thought the heavier the fabric the more shrink but these were 10 oz. they are now my painting jeans.

I haven't washed any of my indigo jeans in the washer but have my selvedge shirts which I turn inside out. Inside out makes sense for the washing machine, but I'm wondering if inside out in the tub for it's initial soak might not be a great idea. I'm thinking because the dye coming off would be trapped, marinating the warp, patch, stitching etc. Outside out, the dye would at least be floating away somewhat and wouldn't be as concentrated. Just my theory though, which is why I asked.

I do inside-out for machine. Right-side out for tub, FWIW.

I did a hot soak in the tub with my N&F LHT, waist only, and there was virtually no shrinkage. I'd probably have to try a machine hot wash and Chuck them in the dryer, but then i might lose some of the inseam length. Balls

I tried the same thing with my N&F on the top half to try and shrink the waist and got the same result. I'm hope to wash them inside out and get more shrinkage.

Have any of you soaked your jeans in a bucket before? I'm curious if there's any difference between this method versus in the tub. I'm almost tempted to try the bucket method because it strikes me as less messy
