I think for me it's part of the region I grew up in. Back in the day growing up I would go to friends quinceaneras in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods and I would literally be the only "white boy" there. I'm talking huge parties in a ranch house on some acreages and you'd have about 100 vaqueros/caballeros straight from Mexico standing around partying, barbecuing, dancing, etc...and they'd all be dressed in their full vaquero get up and it was cool, good times, and they were always super freaking cool but you'd better know some Spanish, and luckily I know enough to say "I want some salsa please", etc...Anyways, I would just never dream of strolling in to an environment like that dressed in my 200 dollar Iron Heart Western shirt. It's just not gonna happen and I would never feel comfortable doing that when your in an environment with a bunch of actual "cowboys". It wouldn't go over well unless I was an actual Cowboy and I would surely be tested on that within a short amount of time upon arrival. I also unknowingly found myself several times in an American Cowboy bar in my early drinking days. Same thing there. I'm just not going to stroll in wearing my hipster Western shirt when I've never been on a horse in my life. There would be no respect for me in that environment and I would be much better off and accepted just being who I am and wearing what I wear. I realize this is more of a personal thing on my end but I'm good with leaving the Western shirts to the real vaqueros/cowboys. I know there's lots of guys on here and on other forums who love the western shirts and that's cool, more power to you, but I just can't do it....and bolo ties??? lol...no, just no. ickes, I have never lived in the Southwest but surely there is a pretty big difference between an Iron Heart western shirt and those worn in the environments you mention? When you mention the Mexican caballeros I am imagining the full on get-up. Hats, boots, flamboyant shirts/pants. Actually, to help me understand better could you did dress up like that and post a picture for us to see?

There definitely are the flamboyant ones but you'll also see the more basic Indigo denim ones. You will see the flamboyance that you are imagining for sure though...good lord man you will see Levi's in colors that you did not even know existed. If Gustin ever runs out of finding unique colors for their jeans they should just consult with some caballeros...and the boots, now those can get pretty outrageous but it's their style man.

The boots... I'm picturing those skull toes worn by the two Mexican assassins in Season 3 of Breaking Bad.

So I glanced over the article that kicked off this thread, then later ended up searching for a Neal Stephenson Flight jacket on Google. Sci-fi fail. Even worse, I have the William Gibson book on my shelf. Need to read it!

I like Western shirts but I'm particular about the color/pattern. I have two Levis Western shirts I thrifted awhile back, one in a solid caramel color and the other in a red plaid flannel. I don't care if I look stupid wearing them. I like them and that's all that matters. I've ridden a horse twice in my life and it was fun.

I likely wouldn't wear one to a cowboy party, but I'd wear one for a "cowboy day" at work (and would prefer such a thing to hawaiian shirt day, any day). Also, I've never had occasion to go to a cowboy party. I prefer that they not have the shoulder points, but I have a couple, and they're Ralph Lauren, so I don't think I'm gettin' any cowboy points for them anyway. I would put snaps on nearly all of of my button-down shirts if I could, though.

Here in the Midwest USA I will occasionally see a Hispanic in western wear. Always middle aged and clean cut, they look natural. I would look and feel out of place. I'd guess they are just wearing what they always have and don't think twice about it.

I understand everyone's aversion to the cowboy look, but I don't think it's very different to the denim workshirt look, which is blue collar (and an occupation I doubt many of us work in)

@61scout - I met a immigrant Guatemalan guy a few years back. Been in the states a little while now.
Rocked 100% real crocodile belt, cowboy boots and hat. It was insane. He said he would have been killed in his home country for them so he wore them proud.
Not that I could pull it off but damn.

First off I don't think a WS is immediately identifiable to most as a Cowboy shirt is. That Western yoke is unmistakable and not exactly subtle, and it is immediately recognizable to most as to what it represents. As for a WS....well I remember when G was dropping theirs and we were begging for it on the G community that a lot of guys didn't even know what made a WS a WS. They didn't know what a WS was basically. And speaking for myself I do have a blue collar job and I have worn work shirts to work for the past 19 years. I don't know, I'm not trying to judge or anything at all, and I know that most people may not share the same view on the Western shirt thing that I do and I'm totally cool with that....it's just me and my opinion.

But like I said, the Western Yoke doesn't bother me as much when it's on a patterned shirt or a flannel for some reason. I own an Iron Heart heavy flannel with a western yoke but it was a bit of a struggle to decide to buy it because of that. Ok, I'll shut up now

Ok, I'll shut up now I love the pointy yoke on the back, my ideal is a pointy joke without the pointy shoulder thingys. Like the mullet of western shirts.
