I think I have a bit of an OCD thing with regards to visible lace knots/ends - always tuck them in with boots and trainers, although do leave them showing on shoes in more formal settings.

I've never had a pair of good boots before; if I decide to get some Red Wings, can I ask you all for some sizing advice? I wear about a 12 in sneakers, and I have flat feet, if that matters. Is this one of those "buy a size down" situations? Thanks! This commentary may be a little late, but, I have some personal experience to add... For work, I'm required to wear steel toes. The last pair I purchased was from RW. They sized me, in store, at 11.5 (H width). Now, with my wide ass feet, they had to be ordered and made directly from the factory. They fit perfectly. A few months ago, I went to try on some RWs for personal use. Unfortunately, Beckmans don't come wide. So, I tried the 8146 with a EE width. The best fit for me was a size 10.5. From this, and all I have read, I believe you need to size down 1 full size when ordering any stock RW boot.

I had never realized this was a thing. You could always just wear pull on boots or velcro shoes. Finally told my wife no more velcro tie shoes for our son, so he can learn how to tie better. Seems like most kids shoes these days are velcro.

Really glad Winterland started this thread...I pulled the trigger on some IR's the other night. I was on Amazon, doing some Christmas shopping, and saw they had a "lightning" (limited time) offer on the Iron Rangers...at $198, I just couldn't talk myself out of it. Came here to check out what you guys had to say about them, and I'm really glad I did. Otherwise, I would have ordered my normal size. Thanks for all your info on sizing these bad boys, you guys are the best

I do love my pair, but they took me a while longer to break in. They hit a spot on my heel that was not pleasant and took a couple of months to fully come around

Wils aka MiddleAge Thanks for that additional info. This is my first pair of quality boots, and if they live up to everything I read about them...probably the only ones I'll ever need Looking forward to breaking them in. I'm looking at it like breaking in my jeans, a little uncomfortable at first, but awesome fit and comfort afterwards Thanks to you too @david

Just remember the leather and its sole will mold to the shape of your feet, similar to a pair of raw jeans.... only exception is.... more painful..

Great choice on IR. It will take about 10-15 wears to break-in but you will be rewarded for next many years. This is my first pair of quality boots Derek, I have two pairs of IRs and never even noticed the break-in. All I would say if you don't know already, as this is your first pair of quality boots, is that it's considered best to not wear them two days in a row. Which of course means you need a second pair of quality boots to alternate them with...
That was the start of my slippery slope, but the more you buy, they less you wear each pair and the longer they all last, so it's cost effective to buy more and more. That's what I tell my wife anyway.

I have Beckmans just because the sole isn't as slippery but I might get a pair someday and have something added to the sole for traction. Slippery on ice. They need to make Iron Rangers with Beckman sole.

derek I thought about the Beckmans, but I liked the speed hooks on the IR's, also the deal was only for the IR's. lol, everyone named Derek should have a pair of Red Wings I have a pair of composite toe Red Wings (I forget the model) that I have worn for 5 years straight at work, and they have held up really well, almost no wear at all, except some scars to the leather. That's why I went with Red Wings for this purchase...I already respect the quality that goes into them.

They're getting better by the day. Day 1 was awful...my feet hurt all over, Day 2 the ankles on the inside of my legs and the ball of my foot, right behind my big toe hurt. Day 3 just the bottom of my feet, and my toes hurt. The pain kinda moves around I can tell these are going to be the most comfortable boots or shoes I've ever owned, just gonna take some time.
