While we're talking S, F and R....if I were a younger man without kids to move around and all the related logistics, I'd go straight to a Scion dealer and get an FR S, rip out every bit of the interior and anything else that added weight but didn't contribute to moving forward, steering or stopping, install a couple of Recaros, go 100% Fast and Furious teenager under the hood and build a streetable track car. I always keep a motorcycle around for practical transportation

Ferrari hasn't really impressed me until they released the 360. Honestly nothing really shouted to me.
I do love the lambo Gallardo and the nissan GTR.
Honesty thinking about finding a gtr in spring. Or trade in my cadillac for a Camaro ZL1

I'm just kidding, I've always been into ferraris as long as I can remember, though I'm not big on the Miami Vice era Testa Rossa style. I love all those middle-century European cars, though, even the weird French ones. I'd love to get ahold of a BMW 2002 or a Volvo 144s, though.

The Ferrari's looked cool but between unreliable, engine out belt services, and a lack of performance I never understood the older 355,348, 318/308. I follow Doug Demuro's year with a ferrari 360 6spd coupe and it was a disappointment for him and I'll be honest it probably would be for me too.

Fezza's have only really been fast since the 360 Scud and F430. I've never cared for the mid engine ones, but would love a 550/575, but the price of manual ones has gone insane recently.

ND Miata is 1,000% better if you don't need a "back seat". Used Elise/Exige would serve your goal much better, assuming you don't mind the smell of glue and don't plan on testing the crash safety.

Well yeah, you'll notice I said pretty, and didn't say reliable, low maintenance, or super-fast. There certainly is an element to Ferrari that is based in the name and history, and that's most of why one would buy one. On top of the pretty thing. edit: I forgot to mention that at the end of my "always liked Ferrari" statement, "I can certainly understand they're not for everyone, and can certainly empathize with the main reasons people hate them (practicality)." I'm talking about cars I like, brands I'm fond of, even if I don't think I'd want to live with one as a regular daily driver. To use one in that way is kind of outside of the design-purpose, being nearly the opposite of a Porsche 911, which is supposed to be fast, practical, and relatively reliable in that scenario.

exophobe - When it comes to brand names yeah of course everyone knows Ferrari oh it's a ferrari it's an expensive Italian sports car etc. A rookie sees a GTR and thinks it looks exotic, asks what it is, owner replies Nissan Gtr, non-car people think oh it's only a nissan. It's kinda like us here on this forum. Everyone knows what Gucci and Louis Vuitton is but is there stuff better than say Ciano or Iron Heart? Up to you to decide. We basically all agree on this forum that cost is not always equal to quality. Ferrari does have a great racing heritage I really love a 360 but with that said I would put a 2002 Corvette Z06 as a better car over all than the Ferrari 360. Numbers, cost and reliability don't lie but the Ferrari is still a Ferrari. Hell they poked fun at it in the original Fast and Furious.

With that said I have been looking at Ferrari 360's. Haha because I really do like the car and they are actually affordable and decently reliable. If the Gallardo keeps dropping it's worth a looks see too.
Porsche and Audi are two brands that do nothing for me.

Numbers, cost and reliability don't lie but the Ferrari is still a Ferrari. Hell they poked fun at it in the original Fast and Furious. On a dark journey through youtube I was watching tons of guys track and total their GT-R, that was sad to watch. Somehow I think the GTR just keeps getting uglier and uglier, seemingly in proportion to the rate it gets faster. Nissan has a great racing heritage, though, so I tend to put aside my bias against Nissan passenger cars (though the people with them seem to like them) when it comes to racing. I love the design on the early Skylines, too, with the mirrors sitting out on the fenders. I'll concede about better car on your criteria, but I'd still rather the Ferrari if money was nothing to me and I had something else to drive normally. It's a sad day when you're beat out by Chevrolet as a better overall car, though. Regarding Fast and the Furious, though, when you paint a car like they do, you concede that you do not win on merits of taste.

I watched Gidi total the Alpha 20.....like I was in the stands watching as it all started at the top end of the track. It was nuts, sad but glad he was safe. He almost went into a barrel roll. Why do you like Ferrari exophobe? My thing was they were exotic sports cars and you never saw them. So seeing them was rare and a treat. Then I really got into cars and the 360 was my dream car at the time. (Got my license in 2003) I just keep getting the vibe most people think Ferrari's are all world beating sports cars that are amazing. I donno I keep going back and forth. People pushing 1500+ HP in the Gtr is nuts. They weren't meant for that haha. When AMS split a block in half it was pretty funny.

brentkuz - oh it's most definitely the romance of the thing. The way they look and the way they sound, and the rest of it just falls away. Heh. For practicality I'm fine sticking with Subaru or a VW, even though I love the idea of an m3 or the like. Something I'm afraid to drive in the wet is generally unappealing to me, though, unless it's an old car I'm taking care of which is why I'd rather something like a 2002 or similar. So in other words, totally aesthetic. I think the only place they actually win from time to time anymore is F1, but they used to be a much bigger deal in much wider swathes of racing -- and I'm more into those cars but I don't think I'd ever want to own one unless, as I've said, I somehow ended up in a position where I have way too much money, which is not a goal of mine, so pretty unlikely.

Basically every car I have bought in my life time was a cool, unique, fun type car. After my first car of course...1998 Ford Escort.... But I quickly got a second car at 18 and had two cars in my name since I was 18. It's a disease. I went through a big Japanese turbo AWD kick for a while. Now it's an american V8 kick. Fun cool cars don't have to be expensive.

It's funny, living near the Newport NewPorsche Coast I've seen more Ferraris and Lamborghinis out here than I can remember. It's really kind of amazing how much money gets thrown around out here. You can go out got a motorcycle ride on Highway 1 on the weekend in the summer and lane split through the stationary traffic and it's like Lambo, Lambo, Maserati, GTR, 360 etc etc....BMW M anythings are basically the Honda Accord of that set. You get numb to it after a while. I'm a regular Joe by SoCal standards but there are some serious money folks out here and the income sources are often rather "nebulous". I know a guy who sells a lot of multi million dollar real estate to Russians and other foreign folks who pay cash for homes.
California is truly bizarre. If you like cars though, it's amazing. The local car guys have so many early Sunday morning meetings out here that you can stumble on to all sorts of crazy stuff. I came across a vintage Abarth club meeting one time....obscure mid century Italian coachwork on Fiats, Ferraris and Lancias etc...all just sitting around outside of a Mexican restaurant like it's normal.

My 5'9, 250# buddy and I looked absurd driving around in his Exige. The top of that car was about dead even with the door handles on a Camry. I fit fine at 6'2", but I also had a Miata and M Coupe that felt roomy. I dig small cars.

I want to test drive a ND. Probably would never buy it for practical reason but really want to see it. Sat in one this week. It's cery, very similar to the feel of the NA, just with a little more room. I had to hammer out the seat travel stop, remove the sun visors and cut out most of the seat foam to fit comfortably in my NB. But the ND is fine as is. Even the one with BBS wheels and Brembos needs some serious lowering though. It's got Big Foot clearance. Nothing funnier than coming out of the grocery store with a full cart and remembering you're in the Miata, then packing yogurt, fruit and bread around the wife.

I haven't been posting here much and this is why. The past two years I have been looking for the right car to buy. Needed to be a 67-68 Camaro or a 71-72 Chevelle. I finally found the chevelle I wanted and grabbed it at a good price. tinyurl.com/or4rpzs[/QUOTE]
