I just received the waxed oak chore coat and don't know what to think about it. It feels like I'm wearing sandpaper and a painter's tarp. Will it break in and get any softer or is this just how waxed canvas is going to feel?

I found I could not wear mine without sweating, so I did some "alterations", but if it fits and you like it, give it time. It will look great with age/wear. PS - welcome to the forum!

That's the nature of the fabric/wax. I didn't know what I was getting myself into, and ended up completely destroying mine by treating it incorrectly. Gustin really screwed me there...and now I hold a grudge. Grr. *shakes fist in air for added drama* FIFY

Will it break in and get any softer or is this just how waxed canvas is going to feel? as others have stated, this is how waxed canvas is supposed to feel. it's thick and durable which is what one would want in a waxed garment, especially if you're exposing it to the elements. I suspect that it'll get softer as the wax wears away. I have the waxed trucker and it's stiff as a board, but I expected this and kinda like it that way. likewise, my Filson tin cloth short cruiser is also pretty stiff.

Thanks guys. I should have probably researched it more prior to pulling the trigger. I've learned a lot about Gustin just by lurking here so hopefully this will help someone else.

So I'll add relevant info for once....
I've got a waxed canvas jacket from Iron and Resin and IMO the trick is to layer it over something substantial. Then just wear the sh!t out of it. Mine is a year old and it's shaped to me a bit an is more comfortable. The texture is what it is though, it never feels good over a plain t shirt. Also, under 50 degrees, it's not a warming piece at all, over 50 degrees and its a weird combo of being sweaty and cold at the same time. Stick a long sleeve heavy shirt under it and the whole thing works.
Think of it like a 1960's version of a technical shell.

Anybody have experience with brownxblack italy basketweave? I'm looking at buying one, but I can't get a great grasp on how it looks in person. Anybody own one?

i remember others not being particularly happy with it as well. it's very lightweight and floppy. it didn't/doesn't work with my style - i layered it when i wore it the one time.
honestly though, i have the indigoxblack chore coat and haven't worn it - so it's more an issue with the cut/style of it than anything else. i was much happier with the apolis chore coats and wore them religiously last winter over the G ones.

They use awesome fabrics for them, but I just can't figure a way to wear them that doesn't make me feel awkward. The truckers fit better, but they are too short. The chore coats are the perfect length, but fit awkwardly. It's sad.

Oh, did you not read the original post to this thread? stinky wrote a pretty thorough review on it. I did! But I was wondering specifically about the blackxbrown italian fabric, and how that looked on the chore coat. The fit on the chore coat is actually pretty great for a really slim guy like me...

so the fabrics on the non-canvas chores are great. really love 'em and if you're happy with the fit of the coat, just go into the brownxblack knowing there's very little structure to the jacket (and it's just that, a light (very light) jacket and not a coat by any means). if that sounds good to you, you'll probably be happy with it.

Every time the Army Bull Denim Chore Coat drops, I scratch my head about buying it. I love the fabric, but still can't decide if the cut/design is right. In the past, I have asked Josh (on SF) to sew this up in a work shirt as I think it would look great. It just occurred to me, after reading this thread and today's re-drop, that this might look like a perfect vintage army shirt if I took bottom pockets off. I've seen pocketectomy discussed here in terms of the CPO arm pocket, but this would be a much larger front-facing surface and a thinner fabric than CPO wool. If the surgery happened right out of the bag and some brushing afterwards, might it work? At $99, it's cheaper than most of their work shirts, lands in the same weight class, and no scoops; might be worth trying for science.

I think the length is meant to hit a couple inches below the pocket openings on a pair of jeans. Regarding the pockets, as long as the fabric is raw and the coat isn't garment washed, it shouldn't be too bad, and you'd likely see the thread holes disappear after a wash. The only problem I have with my chore coat is that it bells out a bit on me at the bottom -- likely due to the fabric stiffness which won't be as much of a problem with a non-waxed fabric, especially if you plan on washing it.
