Disclaimer: this post may be sprinkled with occasional profanity, I'll try to keep it at a minimum for those who are sensitive. My Italy Brown X Black basket weave chore "coat" arrived on Saturday. I was very excited about this "coat" since I pulled the trigger on it. This was going to be the item that restored my faith in Gustin and had me buying directly from them (rather than second-hand on BST/eBay to avoid measurement issues). I have a well-loved chore coat that had been a staple of my wardrobe since 1999, but a huge weight reduction a few year ago has rendered it David Byrne-esque circa Stop Making Sense, so I needed a new chore coat, and this "coat" was going to be the one to replace it. Of course, you're probably asking yourself "Stinky, why do you keep putting the word 'coat' in quotes when you refer to the Gustin Chore 'Coat?'" Good question. Why? Because it's not a f*cking coat. It's a fashion accessory. It's like a scarf or a pocket square or one of those ridiculous man-purse things. It has absolutely no functionality that a traditional coat would have. Actually, the man-purse thing is much more functional because you can actually store stuff in there like your groceries or your self-esteem. This thing, though. Not a coat. It's more of an overshirt with those goddamn tight shoulders and high armholes. My 7 year old fashion-forward daughter saw me wearing it (more on her in a bit) and said, "is that a coat? it looks like a shirt." Seriously, that's what she said. I can't make this stuff up. This is what happened as I pulled it out of the bag . . . I was wearing a flannel shirt, and put it on, and thought "wow, the shoulders are tight. fits great every where else, but the shoulders are way tight. This thing is going back." And then I decided I'd see what it looks like without the flannel shirt, so I took the jacket off and threw it on the table and took my flannel off. And then I picked up my coat and realized that I wasn't sending it back and that I now owned it forever. Why? Because the previously-referenced 7YO girl had attended a birthday party at which she designed an apron using puffy fabric paint, and it was drying in the exact spot where I laid my jacket down. Luckily, the red paint happens to be on the inside of the jacket and I got most of it off, but it's remnants are now there forever. This is literally 45 seconds after I took it out of the pouch. My wife told me it was washable, and I thought 1) it wouldn't be very effective fabric paint if it washed out, now would it?, and 2) if i wash it, I'll never be able to wear it, so thanks for that. Anyhow, the shoulders are crazy tight, the arms are a bit tight too, and everything from the nipples down fits perfectly. Why do they insist on making clothes for people who do not do upper-body exercise? I've read numerous times where people have said about their chore coats and their truckers: "It fits tight in the shoulders and I can't get the top two buttons buttoned, but it looks GREAT and i can pull it off if I only wear a gauze t-shirt underneath." This is complete bullshit. In order for a coat to be functional, it should A) allow you to wear something underneath it without B) sizing up so large that you look like you are wearing a 70s shirred elastic mini-dress. Seriously, a coat should allow you to do "coaty" things, like wear it as a coat. With stuff underneath. And not look like a blouse. Anyhow, fabric is nice (except for the red paint on the inside). Construction seems okay (loose button threads though). Collar is great (everyone should be able to rock a John Travolta/SNF collar). It's not a coat. The overall cut of this thing is a mess. Looks like a shirt. Didn't measure it because it seems under spec and I don't want to get pissed off at it any more than I already am. And no pictures. You get no pictures. I might take some when I can wear for that 3-day window next fall. So, that about does it for me with G, save the Raw Umbers (unless roman and Dirty_Denim can score some of that denim).

Sorry to hear and thanks for the heads up to the members here.... Frankly, I am not surprised by your review at all. I really believe Gustin is using some models to fit their clothes and those have very different body shape than me, especially upper body and torso length.

The waxed ones will give you a different experience, you're cold but sweating the entire time you're wearing it. It's like having the flu. I really like my waxed charcoal chore coat, but it does have very limited wearing potential, although if you can jam a warm hoodie (side note, I didn't think I could and then I just did it, and it accommodated it fairly well) under it it becomes a lot more versatile as the weather gets colder. The non-waxed versions it seems like should probably be made into workshirts, but the workshirts have a more pronounced cut issue (not to be disparaging, but some of the side-profile work-shirt shots make them look like maternity clothing). I'm hoping the slim wabi-sabi will be better, but I wouldn't be able to wear my HS1 workshirt if I hadn't sized it as a coat.
That said, I'm bummed I missed the brown black, and almost got on the indigo but missed it since it got a head of steam on it and (I think) same-day or two-day funded.

Look at the bright side, now you will have all those Gustin dollars available to put in the 7YO's college fund.

sorry to hear about your chore coat issues. I plan on posting an extensive review on my Gustin waxed trucker and Filson waxed short cruiser, but I also wanted to include the Lawless cruiser so I can compare the 3 brands instead of just Gustin and Filson. But back to your post, I had a similar issue with my waxed trucker, although not nearly as bad. their coats are definitely fitted, meaning there's very little room for layering underneath. my G trucker fits me nicely and I don't really have any complaints, but the fit is the biggest difference between Gustin and Filson. My Filson short cruiser is in the Seattle fit, but Filson adds a little bit of extra wiggle room to allow for layering. The other day I wore my Filson and was able to comfortably wear a short-sleeve short with a long-sleeve short over that with a flannel shirt over that with a zip up hoodie over that and still be comfortable. With my Gustin trucker I can either only wear a long-sleeve OCBD or a long-sleeve thermal shirt underneath and that's it.

i guess my body's weird because i size the same in G's jackets as i do their shirts and i'm able to get a thick shawl collar under my chore coat. i do agree with stinky's complaints about the brownxblack though. i like the material a lot and the fit works for me but it's nothing more than a holster really. put it on over whatever you're wearing so you have some easily accessible pockets when you need them. it's not something that's going to help cut the chill on its own. this one would have greatly benefitted from some sort of lining not only to make it a bit heavier/warmer but also to give it some structure.

Yeah, sounds like you got a size too small or something? I can wear (and am wearing today) a heavy sweater under mine. Yeah, it's cut more for fashion than "chores" and it's not really a "coat" it's a very light jacket. I've received many compliments on it, and not from 7 y.o. girls Sounds like it's just not a good fit for you. I think Gustin's products only "fit" VERY specific body types, it's annoying. I'm too tall for most of their products, but by some miracle the medium chore coat in army green fits me pretty dang well. I have a M shirt from Gustin as well, but won't order any more shirts/jackets from them due to cut/length issues.

The problem is that if I would have sized up to an XL, the chest dimension was *bigger* than the one that doesn't fit me. So I went with an L. And according the the fit guide, it should fit well. But it doesn't--at least in the arms and the shoulders.

Just think how much easier it could be if they were willing to post shoulder measurements for jackets instead of taking the *'other places don't either...neener, neener, neener' stance

Jackets are the most difficult thing of the clothing line to make CORRECTLY. And the most difficult as a buyer to get right. Take it from the jacket guys here - the hunt is a fun but expensive and frustrating one...

Yeah, I never got that bottom hem measurement either because, you know, they didn't have any in the office to measure.

I am still shocked Gusin won't give out shoulder measurements for jackets.
Thankfully I got to cancel and sell both the chore coats I ordered. No lost cash as all.

I wore mine Saturday with a tshirt underneath and Sunday with a flannel underneath and it worked well. I agree with your assessment that is a more a shirt than a coat (I said as much elsewhere), but the cut works for me. If it had been even a little bit cooler yesterday, I would have needed another coat over it which is sort of ridiculous.
It's a VERY retro looking garment though with the collar and the big floppy pocket. I like it and all, but it sorta reminds me of the stuff we used to buy in thrift stores in the late 80's and early 90's before thrift stores became "chic" and all the good stuff was picked up by second hand boutique buyers.

efrenlopez: my chest is 39 (not sure about my cup size), and the CC measures 44" one inch below the arm seam. can you give me a few days to mull it over? i love the fabric and the color as well as the overall look of it, it's just really tight on my shoulders and under the arms. if you are a tad bit narrower up top, it should fit fine. let's talk in a few days?

I'm 6'2", 185 lbs in good shape and the shoulder/chest area fits fine over an OCBD and undershirt. I actually like the length because it hides an untucked shirt and is different than most of my other coats. I do wish it was a couple of inches slimmer around the waist, but that kind of fit doesn't really exist from what I've seen. Or maybe I just don't know of the jackets with a 6" drop from chest to waist.
