bugula, it will age better than your everyday kit. The "other kit" always does...and then it leaves...ahem...I mean gets lost.....never mind. So anyway, a side of natural Horween CXL showed up today after some serious delays. It's beautiful stuff. I couldn't resist sewing up a sample with a veg tan backing....belts coming soon. I put the flesh sides together so the back of the sample is nice, beautiful veg tan skin side rather than flesh.

Hey guys, the Natural CXL belt has arrived! I have to say, we love this belt and my GF/partner has already attempted to appropriate this piece for her own collection. This one might be our undoing as a couple…..or maybe I’ll just make second belt. For myself. The specs: Beautiful 6oz natural Horween CXL face, double needle hand stitched to a to a 6oz veg tan backing. If you have any CXL in your life, you know how wonderful this leather is. It has miles of character right from the start and continues to evolve over time in something truly special. On the backside of the belt, the backing is installed skin side out for a super clean look and will only get better with age as well. Unlike some other CXL belts, we don’t resort to raw edges because we like the finished look of a burnished edge. We do a careful bevel and beeswax burnish, more subtle and less “hardened” than our pure veg tan belts. We do it this way because of the nature of CXL (and any other pull up leather). A pull up leather will not respond well to a heavy burnish unless enamels or multiple step complicated burnishing methods are employed to harden the CXL and then you end up with a high maintenance edge. We’ve struck a balance that we thing looks perfect with the overall aesthetic of CXL and give you a very clean edge. You’ll love this belt, it looks great and you’ll feel the care we put into making it the first time you pick it up. This belt really is a next level piece. 80.00 shipped within the USA 110.00 shipped international PM me for orders.

see below: One last thing....the marshdown site is going to be down for a while for refurbishment so ALL of my online orders will come through this thread. If you see somthing from the earlier posts in this thread that you're interested in, let me know and I'll make it for you. Basically, ignore any "orders need to be recieved by" comments you come across in this thread. You want it - we will make it for you.

Haha, oops. Apparently I shouldn't tuck the doubled up portion under my suit belt loop. One dead belt loop...

If the plain Mox valet is $180, I hate to ask how much this might be:

Guys, the site is down (thanks @david btw for the cut/paste update) and likely vaporized at this point. We want to rework it from the ground up in the near future. Right now we are doing local sales, consignment is in the works and of course, this forum. The website was getting traffic but the overhead of working on it, paying for it and updating it was frankly not worth the effort in the way that we were attempting to manage it so we let it die a merciful death. We're going to regroup soon and launch a new site, a very clean, simple site. bentin, pm sent. All, we do one offs and custom stuff so drop a note if you want to chat....

How does the edge hold up. Is it glued, and will it hold or does it become 2 pieces after a while? Its kinda hard to see on the pix.

I use a strong bonding compound to hold the two halves together and I make sure the bonding compound goes all the way to the edge. The edge should stay in place for a long time. That being said, any belt with a chrome tanned texture will always be softer than a veg tanned leather and depending on the use of the owner, wear patterns can vary. CXL is sort of a strange case in that it has both chrome tanning and veg tanning techniques applied to it so its medium soft..
The edges should stay together, however it's just leather after all and under certain conditions, it could slightly delaminate. I've been curious as to how Gustins CXL belt edges hold up but have never seen a worn in example and don't own one myself.
Eventually I'm going to make an overlapping edge belt with CXL (cxl wraps around the veg tan "core" but it will be quite pricey and a bit more dressy. That is a way off though, maybe in the spring.

Are you going to make any long wallets with wallet chains (rope?) in veg tanned?

Are you going to make any long wallets with wallet chains (rope?) in veg tanned? I did just draw up a couple patterns but I haven't made one yet. What are you interested in? If you want me to make something specific I can do that, just shoot a PM with some pics.

A shipment of belts is going out tomorrow, I forgot today was a postal holiday (doh!). I think I've been keeping up with anyone commissioning custom work as well...if not, PM me. Also, I figured you guys might like seeing a couple of the tools I use since this group seems to like vintage tooling and things made using old equipment. I have a lot of modern stuff but I try to buy nice antique pieces to work with whenever possible or when I upgrade because the steel and general workmanship was far superior to what is made today unless you go to a custom toolmaker. It's also cool to consider who used these tools before I did and what they made with them, if only these tools could talk. First up is a round knife (a general leather knife) made by Henry Gomph, a tool maker out of Albany NY. His company was established in 1866 and went until approximately 1924. This is a 5 inch wide round knife and I keep it scary sharp. One slip, lazy technique or lack of attention and you're looking at stitches at best, picking up your own finger(s) at worst. It's a beautiful piece with a carbon steel blade. Modern mass produced round knives are made with stainless blades and won't take or hold an edge like the old knives do. It'll take a Zombie cranium off in one swipe as well. The second tool is a Dixon plough gauge (it cuts straps). Made in England, the company was established in 1843 and are still producing leather tools but the old ones are the best. It's a well made piece and a real joy to use.

How do you put/keep an edge on the Round knife? Oil stone I use this thing, a dmt surface (diamond). Pricey but no oil required. Its reversable with one side being more coarse than the other. Lasts forever. On a really bad edge you can use ultra high grit sandpaper to get the edge angle back into shape and then the sharpening surface to complete the nice edge. That being said there are old knife guys who can get better results than me using an oilstone. So many ways to skin a cat...... I'm a total novice, I can get it done but for good sharpening advice check youtube, there are guys who've made a science of it. I just learn from them....
