You should at least see the first of each, Bourne for the Mini chase, and The Matrix just because it's a pretty solid movie. Unless, of course, you just don't like to watch movies, in which case carry on my wayward son. the originals were a little different imo. I was 5 when Star Wars came out. there's no denying that at that time the original films were exciting and different. I don't hate the originals, despite the dialogue. the prequels, on the other hand, were an abomination. They were. Mainly Episode 1. Episodes II and III were ok, but for the "nooo" scene and the "younglings" scene and anything with that freakin' Gungan. Otherwise, pretty decent. Episode 1 was truly awful. But, in addition to being a solid filmmaker, JJ is also the ultimate fanboy and Kasdan is an amazing writer (Big Chill, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Body Heat, Silverado was OK...), so I trust them not to screw it up.

I think it was a great move for Lucas to sell the rights to Disney and for Disney in turn to bring in other creative talent. JJ Abrams has also had a pretty solid history of putting out good stuff, and despite what some people think, I actually liked the Star Trek reboots. I'm excited to see what they're gonna do with the other spin offs.
The problem with the prequels is that you can't erase them from history, so they're now part of the Star Wars canon. I actually felt bad for the actors like Ewan McGregor and Sam Jackson being cast in the prequels - it felt like they were wasted talent.

Who doesn't love Jar Jar Binks? Jar Jar wouldn't have been so bad if he wasn't a caricature of a Jamaican. same goes for some of the other aliens in the film, most notably some of the creatures from the trade federation (or whatever) that sounded like Asians speaking broken English. WTF was Lucas thinking?

I actually felt bad for the actors like Ewan McGregor and Sam Jackson being cast in the prequels - it felt like they were wasted talent. I made the snarky comment before, but the Abrams Star Trek movies were totally Star Wars movies set in the Trek universe, which I think lended to their success. They were okay as Star Trek movies, and definitely revitalized the franchise, but had the black and white morality of Star Wars movies. I think the biggest wasted opportunity in the prequels, even though it was brilliant from a marketing perspective (and likely the reason anyone under 25 is even interested in the new movies) was the handling of the Clone Wars. All anyone wanted the prequels to be was the Clone Wars, and instead Lucas made it an animated series and gave us an Anakin Skywalker biopic spread over ten hours. Sure, one of the best sequences of the prequels is probably Anakin losing it and killing all the sand people, but that's almost where Episode I should have started. Decent dialogue can establish all the stuff between Anakin and Obi Wan (and Anakin and Padme, for that matter) that they spent the better part of two movies stumbling through -- but Lucas can't write dialogue so it makes sense he'd fail in that. Hell, Alec Guinness almost told the story of the prequels better in three lines of dialogue and expressions in Episode IV than all of the prequel movies. I feel like Lucas finally remembered how to make movies when he got to Episode III, but it really didn't matter at that point, and he didn't have enough self control to prevent recreating a scene out of Frankenstein at the end. I guess this is what happens when you let a sound designer edit your film, and as a last ditch effort use Michael Bay's editor to punch things up at the end. Though I'm guessing he actually used inexperienced editors largely so that he could push them around in the editing room and get what he wanted.

It was a really cool expansion of the old motif. Good stuff for sure.

I figure, given that there is more than one theater showing it around the clock opening weekend in my area, I'm not gonna have too much trouble getting in to see it. And if I figure wrong, I'm only going to end up crying like, a tiny bit. If you miss opening weekend, better avoid any social interactions until you get to see it. I feel like I should clarify. I wasn't boycotting the preorder, rather I didn't see the importance in being there the moment that the floodgates opened for preorder. I'll be seeing it on the 18th -- I'd see it on the 17th but I'll be at an Evening with Kevin Smith, and doors open on that the same time as the first showtime for Star Wars. If dude has real high-end pull he'll show it in the theater after his ass is done talking -- I'm pretty sure that's an audience that overlaps right about 100%.

I read an article somewhere where JJ Abrams was quoted as saying Rey and Finn's last name's were left out intentionally. This brings up the question, could Rey be a Skywalker? My guess is yes. same goes for Kylo Ren. If he is in fact Han & Leia's son, he too would have the force, albeit one that has turned him to the darkside. Just a theory

Finn I don't think is related to anyone, and if anyone, not anyone big in the main films. Possibly some offshoot property like Clone Wars or Rebels. He better not be a Calrissian. That would be way too tidy and lame. Rey and Kylo are somehow related to some combo of Luke, or Han+Leia.

there's a new-ish international trailer out with a little bit more footage. love the nod to Apocalypse Now with the Tie Fighters Since everyone is intent on ruining any surprise in this movie before release, I've stopped looking at anything. It's only a matter of time before JJ drops the plot in an interview about Lost or some shit.

So, the music cue makes it absolutely obvious, but I found this little nod unexpected in the trailer:

I won't be able to see it for two weeks. I think I'm destined to know the entire movie before watching it.
