The sole and lining are just bad. A black or brown sole would have helped immensely and if they were just going for stupid, they came up short by not using these: go Dukes! JMU if you don't know who the Dukes are. James Madison University if you don't what JMU is. A school in Virginia if you don't know what James Madison University is. A state in the United States if you don't know what Virginia is.

That's a nicer finish than most black shell, nicely scored.

For reference, this horse died in vain. Alden should be banned from using shell (and these are even supposed to be #8). Rubber galoshes. Turrble.

Either captoe (perforated or plain), or nothing. Hate the moc-toe/norwegian split-toe styles on shell boots (hate the NST in general as well).

Would it kill companies to just give their lasts a number between say 1 and 10? 4497S implies that there are millions of other choices.

I ask because a lot of the US MTOs use the W2298 ( bentin , maybe they do have nearly 5000 last types?) which is a more "americanized" profile, similar to Alden. That being said, how in the hell do you get a brand new pair of shell boots and not try them on? You'd find me strutting around the house all evening in those boots wearing shorts/lounge pants or whatever else I'm wearing after work.

I just read to go a full size down for UK sizing, and that's what I did. Hope it works out so I don't have to ship these back to the UK. And it takes me a long time to commit to wearing footwear I buy. I have to plan in advance to wear it, and the weather outside has to be perfect even though I know my shoes can take a beating. Reason why all these have zero wears.

devastitis - you've completed the fuzzy boot set and moved on to smooth boots?

devastitis - you've completed the fuzzy boot set and moved on to smooth boots? Smooth captoes. Variety and devastitis are apparently not friends. Trickers look great though, far and away my favorite of what's shown. I guess I need to look into their boots again, I'd written them off as all purple scotch grain all the time.

I have a great variety lol..Just a coincidence that all the Bergs and shell boots I got were captoes. Seems that most of the 2030 lasted ones I like are captoes. I have two pairs of smooth non-captoe boots. My AE Dalton boots and Red Wing Moc Toes.

It's just the multiple plays on the same theme. You like your repetition. Says the guy with forty checked dress shirts.

It's possible that you have a problem . . .

Note to self, line up all the captoes so it's one beautiful line. Damn you, Color #8 Vibergs for being a shorter captoe! I didn't actually realize I had so many captoes until you pointed it out, bentin

It's possible that you have a problem . . . I probably do. I like my footwear pristine, until they're not. Then I wear the crap out of them.

I've just discovered the Tricker's outlet which sells boots and shoes for £240 or less. I imagine they deduct VAT for overseas sales. That site doesn't seem to show all stock, but this Instagram one shows the usually short-lived bargains. I just received an excellent pair of burgundy Stow boots from the Instagram link, no defects, for only £240, down from the £390 I expected to pay. I'll put up pics tomorrow when I get better light.

devastitis so you haven't worn those hunter green Aldens? What size are they? Because if you ever want to let them go, I'd certainly be interested if they were my size.

Those are size 9D in the Barrie Last. I'm selling a pair of hunting green George Boots, which are on the other end of this picture, and the same size. But I'm planning on keeping the wingtips.

Yeah, that place is a good find. I did send them an email about a month ago with no response, I'll have to try again.

devastitis probably the right size but not the right style. I'm debating as to whether I save up for the green Aldens or for the Truman Olive or Coyote.

If you stay up past midnight EST, you can get any of the Jcrew Aldens for 30% off when Jcrew has their code glitches. It's pretty infrequent, but when it happens, it's 30% off the entire store. That's how I got the Alden Shell PCTs and the Alden Wingtip Boots in Hunting Green Suede. Here's an album on the Wingtips.

These are the burgundy Stows I got yesterday. I like the colour a lot, as it goes well with my Aero cordovan jackets. These have the commando soles, which are now my first choice due to combining the tread depth and robustness of Vibram with the edge subtlety of Dainite. For me, the Stow is a great all-round boot, equally usable in the office with suit trousers and outside with jeans.
