Just a couple years ago boot leg was the fad. You guys report back right here with me when this skinny legged man fad is done. History will prove me right X2. The industry has to constantly sell new trends. A standard sized hem is that for a reason.

This could also be why smaller hems appear tiny to you. And as devastitus pointed out, the hem on the slim isn't exactly skinny

I wear their 35, so maybe there's a difference. I tried a pair of slims once and it wasn't an 8" opening, it was around 7"+, and the opening did not cover the tops of my shoes. And by the tops I mean the very top, above the laces, they got caught up in the tongue. They felt good, I liked the way they felt, but when I looked in a full length mirror I wanted to run right home and change immediately! They just looked really silly to me. And I'm a slim guy, so it's not a question of being the wrong body type My comfort zone is 8"-9". It just feels right.

I think in a slim fit I like Ciano's cuff opening. His specs list them as 16.4" for a size 36. Gustin's 35 are spec'd at 15.5". But yeah, my Gustin's slims got caught up at the shoe opening, and those were slip on's. Lace ups would have been even worst. I no longer have them btw, I sold them after that first wear.

History will prove me right It sounds like you're basing your argument on a pair of slims that came in under spec, since the hem width on a 35 should be 7.75, and if yours came in around 7 it's hard to say what else might have been out of whack. The only time I run into what you're describing with the shoes is when I wear a pair of Supra's I have, and a pair of Pumas with a thick tongue. With boots they hit about 1.5" off my heel, with lower profile shoes they drop right near the bottom of my heel, just above the sole of the shoe. In the end, these don't fit you, but it doesn't mean everyone that it does work for is falling into the latest fad and they're going to regret it.

I'm sure my 35 slims this year will do an even better job.

If they came in small and not to spec that's one thing.

History will prove me right boot cut's still a desired fit by some. regardless, wide straight legs haven't come back into fashion because as you say it's gone from boot to skinny/taper. something else will be next. obviously you don't, but most people like to see their shoes when they look down.

Low rise can be an issue. Without a belt at least with me. I need to wear a belt and need to have a shirt that covers my ass just incase.

Greetings! First official post here, so I thought I’d share my thoughts on the Gustin fit.
I’ve tried both straight and slim fit in sizes 33-35 while trying to figure Gustins size pattern. 34 straight Heavy’s looked ridiculous, high waist, super huge hem, would’ve ended up as a pair of dad jeans, ugh. 35 slim Japan 13’s are baggy and comfortable and are my work pants as I can freely roll around in them and they look proportional to my workboots. 34 slim natural indigos fit nice, but were boring and the extra long inseam is annoying. It wasn’t until the Cone BlueXBlack snafu that I discovered my perfect fit is a 33 slim. A little tight in the beginning, but stretched out nicely and look appropriate for the office. They look great with kicks, chucks and some dress shoes. I’m sure losing 20 lbs in the past year helped.
Ordered my Japan 21’s in 33 slim, so I’m waiting with crossed fingers that they don’t sew up ridiculously small.
TL;DR (haha don’t take this too seriously!) Gustin straight- old, fat (or a bodybuilder), Midwesterner Gustin slim- young, in shape, living in a metro area Gustin skinny- very young, stick-figure, damn hipster living in Bushwick

Ordered my Japan 21’s in 33 slim, so I’m waiting with crossed fingers that they don’t sew up ridiculously small. my guess is they will sew up small. Both my Japan One Sevens and Blue 17's came in at 34" in the waist for a 34 slim. Their fit guide has the 34 slims at 34.5" but the 34" waist actually worked out for me since I lost weight.

Half an inch is doable. I'm breaking in a pair of Japan BlackXBlack in 33 slim atm and already there is a bit of room in the waist. I'm counting on the J21's to be as soft as they say and has some give to the fabric unlike the heavyweight 23's

It seems users on this site favor the slim fit, but I'll throw my dissenting opinion into the discussion in favor of the straight fit with one caveat; they may not be for us big guys. I'm 6'4", 225#s, and have size 15 feet. My thighs are smaller than my 300# powerlifting days, but still clock in at about 26 inches cold and I don't even lift anymore. With just little walking around town they'll swell a half inch and I've literally had my toes go numb as the circulation to my feet gets cut off due to thigh tightness. That's with a waist too loose to stay up without a belt! Not to mention the cuffs look a little odd and tight in contrast to my flipper feet and the rise is ass crack city for my height. Something to keep in mind when considering a fit that while trendy, may not be best for a given body top. Straight fits jeans fit my waist snug with an equally snug thigh that still require a little wear in to be comfortable.
TL;DR: Look at size charts when picking your fit if you're bigger, the slim fits simply may not be for you.

Slim would be great with an inch more rear rise. At least at 6'2", they get awfully drafty. Rest of the fit is fine, almost identical to RgT SK's, but the rear rise, at least on my one pair of G Slims is an inch less than SK's and that makes a world of ventilation difference.
The top block is actually loose on G Slim in the same size as I wear in Straights, but sizing down would (presumably with no actual rear rise measurements) make things even worse for me.

I mean..you don't buy and wear a slim fit just for the sake of wearing a slim fit. You gotta be able to fit into it first..If your body type doesn't fit the mold and measurements of a slim fit, then you go straight.

You gotta be able to fit into it first..If your body type doesn't fit the mold and measurements of a slim fit, then you go straight. This creeps up in the jackets forums too. You see guys with guts buying a tight-fitting jacket and asking how it looks. You gotta be aware of your build. I am, and I could wear the slims. Not a fat-ass, but I have some pounds to lose. Nobody knows when I bitch about it except me. But make no mistake, when I drop the 20, I'll look and feel 100% better.

This is still an argument? Don't you just buy jeans that fit and move on?
