Do any of you guys have experience with denim brands that are not part of the japnese big 5 ( i.e Momataro, Iron Heart, Oni, Flat Head, Full Count)?
Looking at Rakuten I often find pretty sweet looking denim for around a hundred bucks, but can't find any info (in English) about a given brand.
Does anyone here have experience with more obscure japanese jean brands and how have they compared to other high-end jeans you've encountered?

Do you have any specific brand in mind? There are a few other brands: Samurai, Pure Blue Japan, Japan Blue, The Strike Gold, Studio D'Artisan which should be included in the group you mentioned. There is a lot of info about each, and many have separate threads on this board. What kinds of things have you found through Rakuten?

Does anyone here have experience with more obscure japanese jean brands and how have they compared to other high-end jeans you've encountered? There are plenty of them. Probably the most obscure brand that I own is Studio Zero. They use cotton/hemp blend denim and the quality, attention to details and construction are to an incredibly high standard. The stitching is impeccable to the point you suspect there's some genuine madness at play. Fully lined pockets, exposed rear pocket rivets, handwritten date, size and the sewer's initials on the inside front pocket, great leather patch. The downside is that the detailing is fairly idiosyncratic and could well be a little too flashy for many. I have the 'Rigid' version of this model: www.zerodenim.com/productslot-02.htm

Ogre denim is Oni from all account I've seen. Maybe a translation or other name for them like a certain line.

Oh good to know, do you happen to know what the purpose of said line is? i.e upper end, lower end than Oni proper?

No clue maybe @untucked or another resident of japan can answer. I just know all the ogre jeans I've seen have ONI labels.

Basically, the translation is quite poor. i tend to use blueowl workshop or selfedge to get the correct specs on jeans and then just make sure it's the same one's on rakuten. On the rakuten site for a store such as rodeo bros, use the navigation on the left to narrow it down to jeans as this seems to provide the most english version.

I got a pair of Sugarcanes from untucked a while back. I'd take pictures, but they're on a boat on the way back to Asia.. they're nice, by the way..

In Rakuten-land it does seem that all the Oni ends up either Ogre Denim, Demon Denim, and sometimes (although rarely), Oni Denim. Looking at them I couldn't discern any difference, so I'm not sure if it's like a Momotaro thing (where they have several lines) or just a translation thing. I'm leaning towards translation thing. I'm hoping to pick up a pair from Oni and something from Pure Blue Japan before the end of the year.

Correct, Oni is seen with different names due to the translation. Pretty cool description on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OniEDIT: I just noticed there's now a thread on Skull Jeans. Looks like they make good quality stuff, just personally not big on their styling.
