I've been meaning to PM you a question about RailCar but since you posted.
I've got one more pair of jeans that I "need". And they got to be right.
What about railcar stands out? Over Iron Heart, 3sixteen, Etc?
I like that there in house, construction looks solid.
But to be honest, the denims themselfs look pretty standard and not that interesting (they don't give much detail. Like Gustin)
I'm looking at the 16oz. Other then being Cone there's no other info.
I just need a little push.
As with most of the high-end jeans makers, it's the details that set Railcar apart. This is the list for the pair I have - and supply similarly extensive info for all their pairs:
-Rear pocket hidden riveting
-Triple-stitched seat seams
-Triple-stitched belt loops that are tucked under the waistband for a strong and clean look
-Two-piece inner and outer waistband to reduce waistband stretch and better fades
-Continuous chain stitched waistband that are tucked to reduce unraveling
-Chain stitch bottom hem
-8oz raw leather patch that is heat-burnt branded and hand made in the Railcar Workshop
-Graphic printed olive green pocket bags
-Railcar branded buttons
-Copper burr riveting
-Railcar signature “R” fly stitch
-Selvedge accents at the out seam, coin pocket and inner fly
But the main attribute of RC jeans is the construction. Honestly, I would give them the nod in a face-off against Iron Heart (yup, they're THAT good). The Spike cut also happens to fit me like a glove, so if any of their cuts work for you then you're golden.
You are right that their denim doesn't, on the face of it, appear overly interesting and they don't offer many fabrics at all. But, what they do offer is clearly selected extremely carefully. The 16oz. denim used in my pair are from Kurabo yet, for example, you put it against Gustin's 16oz HAs and the difference, in appearance, feel and drape is huge. I don't know if they have fabric made to their spec. or how they go about sourcing it but whatever they're doing certainly works. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the RC denim is one of the very best I own... out of around 130 pairs, that's praise indeed.
When I bought my pair I was in London and had virtually every big name at my fingertips (ONI, IH, Samurai, PBJ, Momotaro, TFH... seriously, you name it, they were there to try on and buy) and yet it was the the Railcars that got my money. I absolutely love them and love wearing them. Some of the best money I've ever spent on jeans.
