What's your story with how you came to discover raw denim? A friend? A website? Do you remember your first pair? Do you still have them?
I'll go first. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and suffered through acid wash and later stone washed jeans. The only knowledge of raw denim I had was from my father telling me that when he was a kid jeans came super stiff and had to be broken in. He said they would take them to the laundromat and run them through a cycle with rock salt. Anyone ever heard of that??
Fast forward to the mid 2000s and I was on a vintage kick and hanging out a lot at The Fedora Lounge. Someone started a thread about Levi's STF 501s. I remembered my dad talking about stiff denim from the old days so I looked into them. I found a thread on the my nudies forum with a STF fade contest. It was too late for me to join but they had all these wonderful pictures of faded, cheap STFs.
So I plunked down $40 and gave it a shot. I followed Levi's advice and sized up, which turned out to be a mistake. I also washed them too soon and go funny washing machine fades. So I started over. I wore that pair hard for over a year, and honestly was wondering where my fades were. I wore them camping and shoved them in a packback after the trip and forgot about them for about a month. I finally pulled them out of that pack. They were dirty and smelled terrible. So I ran them through the washing machine. Holy shit the results were amazing!
I was the proud owner of some amazingly faded Levis. Then the crotch blew out. I still had my first, ovesized, washing maching ruined STFs laying around. My wife cut them up to make some patches to fix my blown crotch. I loved the rustic look of the patchwork. Sadly (but also fortunately) I lost 45lbs earlier this year so my cherished STFs are way to big now.
I thought about treating myself to some Iron Hearts. They were the only other raw denim that I knew about, but they are so expensive. But luckily I stumbled across Gustin from a facebook ad of all things. Now I own 3 pair of Gustin with 2 on the way and a pair of Lawless. I'm never going to get any of these broken in!!!
Here is what they looked like at the 1 year point before I washed them:
I think I still have them shoved in a closet. I'll try to snap some post wash, sick fade pics.
