Didn't know where I should start this threat but I thought it would be useful to have an official how-to post about washing and caring for denim. I believe Winterland posted a couple of helpful videos but since there's no one way of washing denim it made sense to open up discussions on what you do to wash your jeans.
I'll start. I'm still waiting to get my re-hemmed 3sixteen SL-120's in the mail but my first thought when I first got them was how stiff they were. I've read numerous threads that stated how one should just wear the shit out of their jeans and only wash them when they get really dirty or start to smell. With that said, I think i'm just going to wear the crap out of my SL-120X's and maybe washing them in 4-5 months. Ideally i'd prefer giving them a cold soak now to get the stiffness out but I'm assuming it won't be an issue after several wears.
Earlier this week I gave a pair of my Uniqlo selvedge a cold soak with Woolite dark after having gone 5 months without a wash. There was no noticeable shrinkage in the waist or inseam, but that's fine with me since these are my best fitting jeans, not to mention my daily beaters.
I'm assuming the convention with selvedge denim is to always cold soak with Woolite dark for 30 minutes to an hour and let hang dry right? Or, if you're looking to actually shrink the waist or inseam then a warm or hot soak would be appropriate.
What do you guys do? How frequently do you wash your jeans? What method do you use? What cleaner?

I go as long as I can stand it between washes, barring a spill or accident, but I'm too lazy to do the whole soaking thing with Sanforized jeans so I just wash them in the machine, inside out on cold, gentle cycle with a 1/4-1/2 cap of Woolite dark and then hang to dry. MAYBE 3-4 minutes on low heat in the dryer if they look really jacked up not usually.
Reminds me, I have two pair that are overdue right now...

I probably should wash the zimbs soon. Been wearing since September. No real smells though but of course some winter salt and sweat from snow removal days.
