1. The forum comes with the Add Attachment option in the upper right of the Reply/Posting page. We have it disabled as we are almost out of space. The forum gets 200Mg for free. This option allows us to upload and view pictures right in the forum without have to be directed to a third party picture hosting site.
We have used 170Mg so far so if we stayed at the same approx usage we would use about 1080Mg after a full year. We started Sept26 2014 Even though we would probably use less if we keep the Add Image To Post option. If we paid for 1200Mg a month cost is $9 a month so $108 a year. So less than a one dollar per member. We could pay as we go as we use more space.
We could put up a Paypal account for donations if members thought this was the way to go.
2. We have added the Add Image To Reply/Post option in the upper left of the posting page which does almost the same thing except when you click on the thumbnail of the picture you are directed to a third party picture hosting site postimage.org to see the bigger picture. It has some advertising etc.
3. The other option is for members to use other third party image hosting sites such as photobucket, imgur, dropbox etc. You have to do all the work here. Uploading, copying and pasting the web address link etc.
Trying to make a poll for the first time so hang with us. Fun! Fun! You have to click on this Thread to see the Poll!! Looks like Poll shows in browser Mobile view but have to switch to webview if using Tapatalk.

I didn't realize there was an attachment limitation, or I would have opted for uploading to a hosting service and linking to images. The attachment option is obviously easy for users, but hosting sites are free/easy as well and offer the ability for albums and using the links elsewhere.

As I said, I'm up for helping with costs to upload attachments. If it stays reasonable, I'm in for paying. I like skipping the step of the upload to another site. I'll toss in $25 to start. That lowers the cost for the rest. I might bump that up if people quit the bickering here!

We have probably over half a year covered already. Woohoo! Get in on the poll people. Democracy in action. At least we can all be happy there are no political arguments here. We are too busy discussing important things like the length of cotton

I'll pitch in $25 also. But will go with what what ever the vote is for. And what ever makes it easiest for the Mods.

I would force all 3rd party. Keeps the board's overhead low and reduces any exposure to claims that you are hosting infringing/bad/whingeing content. The only possible exception I'd go for is an avatar, and even though I do have one, I have to admit to preferring a leaner, more "clean" forum post layout (cf., Ars Technica).

I'm quite content to use Imgur or similar. I really don't find it to be much more work; it's about three extra clicks and two keystrokes.
That said, if there's a clear majority preference for in-house image hosting, I'll throw in a fiver or something to do my bit.

Hell, I'd do a quarter C as well.. this community rocks. My only concern is the space requirements will continue to grow as this forum ages. We'll eventually hit the new limit and that'll raise site costs. I don't particularly like to see the "this image is no longer available" message, but maybe that's how we reign in storage use.
Is there an admin tool that automatically moves pics to something like imgur to keep usage low?

I don't mind any of the external hosting sites except for that damn Russian one that always asks permission to install viruses.

I could check into it but highly doubt there would be an automated process. There is a way for us to delete old pictures but of course then they would not show up. Yes hopefully the forum does grow and need more space and if most like the paid hosting it would be a minimal amount for everyone to kick in towards space. We are almost covered by individual offers already.

Overall Proboards has been a great option for what we need/do. They do however have some limits before you have to upgrade with a cost. They have to make money somehow to pay for the service. We are happy the ads Proboards puts in are not intrusive at all. Otherwise we would have to pay to be ad free. Storage space has been about the only thing we could need more of. We also are provided a certain amount of Plugins that add functionality to the forum. We still have more we can use and for what we do they are not even needed. I had checked into the different options including a self hosted site and Proboards seemed the best option and allows basically unlimited options to grow with limited to no cost.

Yeah.. it seems like a simple script could accomplish this, or it could be brute forced, but that'd be pretty tedious and boring.. just looking at options. I used imgur for my last (and all future) post.. it's easy and doesn't require an account.

Pictures are an important part of the discussion so the easier we make it for folks to post them the more we will get, which helps add to the conversation. My .02

Pictures are mucho importante so I would love for us to do the easiest and obvious costly option. Lawless will drop $100 when we are all ready to go
We will also match dollar for dollar what any other brand adds to help the cause up to $500

I like it too, but people are free to continue using other services. It won't stop you from using photobucket, etc. Just makes things easier for those who either don't use them or are technically challenged

This is the first forum I've been a part of that the members appear to not want image hosting! Color me amazed.

This is the first forum I've been a part of that the members appear to not want image hosting! Color me amazed. i think it's the prevalence of easy/free alternate 3rd party options...which in reality give everyone a bit more flexibility in terms of future use of whatever they're uploading (not to mention...if DigDug can figure out how to post a photo over on G-comm...anyone can figure out how to post something here )

I just don't want the staff to have to bear the cost when Dropbox/Imgur/Postimg are all free(ish).
