any of you nerds excited for Alien: Covenant? Prometheus was a bit meh but i'm hoping that Ridley returns to his roots and injects a little more suspense and character development with Covenant. On a side note, it sounds like Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel is still moving forward, that is, after Covenant has come out. I was pondering what Blomkamp's film might be about and here's what I came up with. Keep in mind that i'm basing this theory purely on the concept art that Blomkamp provided last year. I think the film will ultimately be about Weyland-Yutani Corp either capturing or creating an alien queen to study or use as a biological weapon. It will have a Jurrasic Park in space vibe to it. In fact, I think it will be a lot like Jurrasic World and how InGen genetically engineered a new dinosaur, except it will be Weyland-Yutani bio engineering an alien queen for their bio weapons division. considering blomkamp's earlier stuff, i'd expect it almost to be told from the point of view of the creature and/or an android character...or at least with a sympathetic leaning in that direction. could be interesting.

Terminator Genysis: 6/10 Ex-Machina: 8/10 Absolutely LOVED Ex-Machina. I watched Ex Machina going without knowing anything about the movie. Thought it was very well done and original. Would have looked very cool on the theater screen.

Absolutely LOVED Ex-Machina. I watched Ex Machina going without knowing anything about the movie. Thought it was very well done and original. Would have looked very cool on the theater screen. It was good. The story is small which should fit better on the small screen, but it was definitely more captivating in the theater. It doesn't lend itself well to a room with the distractions of home. It's a great film, though, especially for a first-time director. I look forward to more with Garland at the helm. People can do worse than to learn from Danny Boyle, and I would say Garland wrote many of Boyle's best films. Thinking of The Nice Guys this weekend.

The jokes in the film were hilarious I would argue that they took adapting the character very seriously, it's just that the character is very self-effacing and irreverent. If that was a wolverine movie it would be almost as bad as, well, wolverine: origins, but in a totally different way. I'm just hoping fox doesn't interpret deadpool's success as a reason to ruin the wolverine movie coming next year.

Independence Day: Resurgance: 2/10. what a dreadful movie. Sh*tty acting followed by an even sh*ttier plot.
Hell or High Water: 5/10. This movie seemed like it was trying too hard to be No Country For Old Men. Kinda surprising because it was written by the same guy who wrote the script for Sicario which I really liked.
Kubo and the Two Strings: 9/10. I watched this with my son lastnite and found it enjoyable. I assumed my boy would get bored with it but he stuck with it and thought it was kinda cool, mainly because Kubo had a sword.

It wasn't scary at all imo and my boy definitely wasn't scared. What surprised me about the film was that it had a Japanese setting, which I didn't think would work for Western audiences. Some of the reviews I read compared it to Miyazaki's films, which I would agree with. The tone and emotional depth were very similar.

I'd say kubo is a pretty strong PG, it has a great message but it's got some intense themes and imagery.
Edit: though, depending on age, these things may go straight over their head.

Also, boo on that assessment of hell or high water. Great but somewhat simple story told quite well -- I'm going to have to watch no country again to see the correlation there, but there aren't any psychopaths in hohw.

Yeah you're the first person I've heard give a bad review on Hell or Highwater. I've heard nothing but good things about that movie like exophobe said.

I really wanted to like Hell or High Water but it fell short. The NCFOM comparisons I made were the setting (Texas), some of the ways the scenes were shot, the tone, the dialogue and the portrayal of Jeff Bridges' character, which was like a cross between his character in True Grit and Tommy Lee Jones' character in NCFOM. The only thing missing was Anton Chigurgh, but if you wanted to look to who the villain is in the movie it's clearly the bank. Don't get me wrong, I like Ben Foster, Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges but the story wasn't nearly as good as Sicario imo. I guess I had high expectations given the glowing reviews it had received and felt disappointed.
