I usually catch up on movie watching in the winter but took advantage of a free movie channel promo and finally watched Whiplash with the wife. Many of my musician friends have told me it is a must see. I remember it winning a few Oscars and they were well deserved. I am still tense in my stomach from watching it. wow. It will make you look at the Farmers insurance commercials very differently once you see it. Highly recommended to musicians and non musicians alike. Watch it. This has to be the best movie I've seen in quit some time. Not your average music oriented movie.

Watched Mad Max fury road and Cop Car recently.
Mad max was awesome and just what I expected. Reminded me of a movie version of Zombie Highway the video game.
Cop Car was awesome. Suspenseful, kind of a dysfunctional childhood experience movie. Really cool movie tho

We don't get this one in flyover country til after the new year, but I'm looking forward to seeing it, even though it looks like one of those where you don't end up happy at the end.

Tried watching Trainwreck last night. I'm possibly the only Amy Shumer detractor in the country, just don't like her brand of comedy. The wife likes her standup though so I gave it a shot. My wife fell asleep halfway in and I was non-stoked so we tossed in the towel and went to bed. The bits took too long to setup and the payoffs were weak. Rotten Tomatoes shows it certified fresh and it made money, so unfortunately for me, I'll probably be forced into watching more of her drivel.

Anyone with a sense of humor is a Shumer detractor. I feel like she's only popular because she's a female comedian[sic]. There's also much evidence of her stealing jokes/skits, but that's neither here nor there. Bottom line is she's not funny, and I agree with you.

Female comedian cliches include the tired out tampon joke. Sure enough, Trainwreck doesn't even bother avoiding that trap and gives us a predictable tampon joke. Super weak and unoriginal.

Guess i'm tired of fat comedians who still make fat jokes. Sarah Silverman, on the other hand, is more up my alley.

I did also watch Spectre the other night as well. I thought it was entertaining, certainly more so than Fury Road. Didn't think the theme song was as good as Adele's Skyfall theme which I think is one of the best in a long time. Story-wise, I was glad to see Spectre finally rearing its ugly head and to see Blofeld make an appearance. I wonder if they're going to set this up with future Blofeld appearances minus Daniel Craig? Either way, a solid film all around imo

I watched Fury Road lastnite and found it underwhelming. the action sequences were good but the story and characters felt cobbled together. I'll stick to the original Mel Gibson versions instead I think Fury Road has fallen into an expectations pit. If you didn't see it before everyone formed an opinion and started touting how great it is, then the bar was set way too high. The minute you see the dude playing the flamethrower guitar, having gone in with Oscar level expectations, there's not way it's going to recover and be as good as you hope/expect. This is the story of Furiosa, Max is really just there to help tell her story, which is a pretty big departure from the other movies (though they're really all just chase movies in the end). To that end, hers is really the only character that has a full story told in this film, and I think it's a good story to tell. I am still curious to see a "director's vision" version of it, as Miller had wanted to make it a silent black and white film with a musical score. It'd be a shame not to hear those engines, though. I really enjoyed it but find the re-watchability slightly lacking.

On the other hand, I picked up the Force Awakens blu-ray and it was just as good, if not better, than the first two times I saw it.

I went into this film knowing how out there the Mad Max universe was, but when I can't form an attachment to any character, aside from Furiosa, then the story falls apart. I'm guessing this film is supposed to take place after Thunderdome right? Tom Hardy's lack of dialogue didn't do much for me other than make me look at him as a guy with severe PTSD

I thought George Miller had indicated this was neither a sequel or a reboot...I guess more a variation on the same premise and character. In the original his wife and kid were run down, I got the same sense of loss from the flashbacks in fury road without any details...a feeling of violent/unfortunate loss. I definitely enjoyed it most upon the first watch without having any real expectation. Still enjoyed it on the rewatch, but less so.

In this context is makes sense that Fury Road isn't a sequel/reboot but a continuation of Max's journey, the trauma of losing his wife and son and his self imposed isolation from society

any of you nerds excited for Alien: Covenant? Prometheus was a bit meh but i'm hoping that Ridley returns to his roots and injects a little more suspense and character development with Covenant.
On a side note, it sounds like Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel is still moving forward, that is, after Covenant has come out. I was pondering what Blomkamp's film might be about and here's what I came up with. Keep in mind that i'm basing this theory purely on the concept art that Blomkamp provided last year. I think the film will ultimately be about Weyland-Yutani Corp either capturing or creating an alien queen to study or use as a biological weapon. It will have a Jurrasic Park in space vibe to it. In fact, I think it will be a lot like Jurrasic World and how InGen genetically engineered a new dinosaur, except it will be Weyland-Yutani bio engineering an alien queen for their bio weapons division.
