I never hear these discussed in either forums. We finally got a little "weather" here in San Diego and I busted these out. All my Gustin is 32 Straight. I tried these in 33 Slim and they're fantastic. Especially the top block.
Even at 16.5 oz I feel they're much more flexible than my Oaks and Japan Classics initially did. In fact the Oaks are still fighting me on breaking in but they draw the most compliments. Maybe the Sixteeners give more due to larger weft and warp threads. My least forgiving are actually the Italian-milled GreyxBlack.
Pretty tight weave on these as I don't feel any "cold" air coming through.

I have been wearing some 16ers for several months now. Bought them in February but barely wore them in the summer due to California weather. They have been in heavy rotation as of late. The denim is a tight weave and great for cold nights but the denim is very stubborn on fading. I went 8 months without a wash and they barely faded. The honeycombs behind my knee are still very very minimal; however, the whiskers on my top block are prominent. The wash had loosened the denim up a good amount and the fading started a little better. I'm starting to see some great vertical fading.
I don't have a lot faith for the people that bought them for Gustin's contest. I feel like the fading will be very minimal by Sept 1, 2015 unless washed and worn very often. Anyone thinking of great non wash fades for the contest will feel very disappointed by Sept. 1. Maybe I'm just not active enough to fade them. They are my work jeans on a food truck so I move around and sweat a lot.

I don't care too much about fades but my Japan Classics fade nicely and pretty quickly. They've also been hand washed a couple times which helps bring out that electric blue in the whiskers and combs

I've got a pair here imgur.com/a/p4Xwx#0They are my favorite cone denim hands down. I know I'm in the minority here but they have a lot more character IMO than the American Heavies. Mine are out of fade rotation and get worn occasionally as I'm trying to wreak destruction on a couple of other pairs of denim right now. |

Thanks @david. I wore them almost daily from mid February 2014 until late July 2014. Last summer was a heat fest here in California (by local standards anyway) so I couldn't hang in August and retreated to other denim in the 12 oz range. Wearing these on the days I commuted by motorcycle was a test of will by mid summer.
The vertical grain is indeed pronounced on these. I don't know if it's a consistent trait or not but on this pair it does stick out and I like it as well.
