We've talked Chucks before. 70's are good. Regular suck. High tops are cool, lows, not so much. I own some of both. Would love a pair of Amazon Green lows, but still haven't tracked them down. Googling "Amazon" and anything else leads to tears.
I like my Vietnamese Chucks a lot more than my Chinese Vans, but the Chucks look a little too small with larger cuffs, so I keep both around.

Go for it. Sometimes I think i am getting too old for chucks, but I get over that. Recommend finding a converse outlet store or something with all of the options and sales and where you can be sure of your size (if you don't already know). Most shoes, I am an 11. In the all-stars, I am a solid 10.5. Also, The finish and features of the 70's are slightly different than the regulars are different than the all-star II's (sizing has been the same 10.5 across the board for me) I found a Mediterranean blue pair of the classics on clearance and they look awesome. Not very grown up, but I get a lot of comments on the color...mostly from girls...but the girls tend to like them because they want a pair in that color and not because they look manly. I also have a pink pair of the 70's that has girls in bathing suits on them (which counters the pink color). Girls really like these too. Nobody notices the bathing suit girls on them, so i can wear them to the office (I work in a construction field office...so my dress code is rather relaxed...but you gotta be confident to roll into that place with pink or blue shoes) Last spring, I got the all-star II's at the converse outlet in Tampa and I really like those. The insole is real and the shoe is a little beefier. The only downside I can find is that they ditched the black piping. It is more grown-up looking, but not quite "chucks." I am OK with that. I am older now. they also only come in more muted colors (last I checked). Depending on how you walk, you might need insoles with the classics or the 70's. I used to heel strike when I walked and these had no support at all and I would feel it in my knees at the end of a long day until I put insoles in. Now I forefoot strike (changed how I ran and it changed how I walk) and they feel great when I walk without insoles. They are light and simple and make me feel lighter and free. Some people like high tops, but I get these as a summer shoe for living on a disgustingly humid island...so I only buy low-tops now and I like them...but it is up to you. Finally, I will say that it is a younger look. I sometimes worry that I am passing the age (or have passed the age) where I went from young hip dude to old guy trying too hard to be hip. Then I remember that I don't care and I am weird and these things are not going to change. So I recommend find a color and style you want on sale and give them a try. Worst case is you are out $30 or $40. Maybe your sons can take them or some kid can find them at goodwill for a steal after you donate them. Based on those scenarios...you can't lose. Everyone wins. UPDATE EDIT! Went to the converse website and they have only about two different all-star II's. Looks like they were a flop and are getting phased out? Bummer, they were a solid shoe, but they do lack the aesthetics that make the chucks popular.

Yeah, I have to size down a full size from Brannock for regular Chucks, which are narrower than 70's, but longer. I size down a half size from Brannock for 70's. I wear Brannock for all Vans.
