those look pretty good. have to admit that my inner skater-punk cringes a bit that vans are being sold at barney's.

I know what you mean, David, seems weird.
At least it's from their 'Warehouse'. I looked all over and couldn't locate this style anywhere. They have the reverse waffle sole, so should be great in the winter.

Now here's a topic I can get in to. I love Vans. Vans, Chucks and Pumas are pretty much all I wear with Vans being number one on the list. I don't care for the ones you posted in the link too much though. I always rock the classics...Sk8 Highs, Old Schools, Eras, etc....in multiple colors. Also something to check out are the Vans LXVI shoes: www.vans.com/shop/mens-shoes-lxviYou will not believe how lightweight and comfortable these are. If regular Vans are a bit uncomfortable for you then try a pair of the LXVI's. I have three pairs and they are great.

This style, the '77 Mid Skool is the original Vans mid/hi top. This style was dissolved when they introduced the SK8 Hi around 1980. They re-introduced it somewhere around 2007.

When I first started out buying trainers I had a few pairs of Vans and, while I always liked the visual aesthetic, I found their sizing and fit never quite worked for me. Much like Converse, I also found them notably uncomfortable.
That said, one of the pairs I really wanted for my trainer collection was a pair of the Jim Greco Escobar in tan leather. Managed to pick up a mint condion, OG box pair about three years ago. Damn, they're sweet.
Also have a pair of Black/White Old Skools as, for me, they're one of the all-time classics of trainer design.

I love Vans. I've been wearing them since I was a kid in the 1980's. I can't even count how many pairs I've had. I favor the slip ons, and right now I have a pair of grey herringbone and a pair of plain black slip ons (white soles), in my rotation. The black slip ons with white sole, are, to me, the ultimate classic vans pair that never go out of style.
Vans have a way of not being overplayed out the way I think converse have. Everybody wears black chuck taylors, but a pair of Vans black slip ons, worn right, still has an edge to them that I dare say converse have now lost.
I appreciate all the new Vans lines coming out but I don't think you can beat those classics.

I see more people wearing Vans today than ever... I probably see more vans than converse.

After I screwed my feet up with chucks as a kid I found Vans to be great since they offered an insole, unlike chuck taylors. Was always a lace-up fan, though, never got into the slip-on.

Yeah I've never been a huge fan of the slip ons myself. I still wear them here and there but I prefer the Old Schools and SK8-HIs all day every day.

Under edit you say you are responding to a teacher. Do you mean me? How do you know I'm a teacher?

They are less universal and, I think, more difficult to wear right. But IMHO they are simply classic california footwear. the essence of west coast style.

No, I do teach. I just thought for a second you might have been one of my students. Believe me, stranger things have happened. Thanks for clearing that up.
