I own one suit. I think I probably bought it in 2004 or 2005. Its Calvin Klein, lightweight wool, black with faint dark blue pinstripes. I think I bought it at the CK outlet store in Williamsburg, Iowa. I had it tailored maybe 5 or so years ago because it was humongous, in keeping with the style at the time it was made. Anyway, the tailoring helped, but it's still not what I would call a slim (or particularly attractive) silhouette. There is a limit on how much a jacket and pants can be taken in I guess. I hardly wear the suit at all (once a year or two tops), but there is an event coming up this fall that will require a suit and I kinda feel like this is the tipping point for an upgrade.
I want a versatile suit that can be worn year round and can be dressed up or down depending on the event. I was thinking grey, lighter weight wool, but could go other colors/fabrics. My goal would be to wear this suit for the next 15-20 years.
So forum, there you have it. I know nothing about suits, so any suggestions on style, brand, construction, etc. would be appreciated. I'm willing to shell out some cash for this too, but some estimates on what I might expect to spend on a mid to high-ish end suit would also be appreciated.

Hickey Freeman if MiUSA is important. They have some modern cuts and you can even find them on Sierra Trading Post sometimes.
I'd recommend a half lined jacket, as full lining is a little warm for four season use and bonded linings are just worthless.
Grey's really versatile. I wear grey and British tan more than any black or navy. I'd go with a solid or herringbone pattern for versatility, skip pinstripes or a glen check.
There are countless Suit Supply style places if you want to try on a few different cuts and get a sense of quality differences, and if the MiC thing doesn't bother you, they're certainly cheap too.

Brooks Brothers is another good choice, and even better when you can nab it on sale + discounted gift cards. $600-1k would be about the range I'd pay for a good year round wool suit. Medium grey to charcoal would be a good color for a main. SuitSupply can do an MTM for under $1k.

Good point, BB is almost always on sale and some (but not all) of their 1818 line is MiUSA.

This is a good start. I have a Hickey Freeman retailer and a BB store locally. I'll start with those.

+1 on Hickey Freeman. I have a HF MiUSA suit that I picked up from Nordstrom Rack at the MOA yrs back...think I paid $500 for it. It's charcoal and is a versatile color than can be worn for any occasion. Although, the last time I wore my suit was a few months back when I went to see a divorce lawyer, and now the pants feel kinda baggy on my frame. I also highly recommend topshelfinc.com/ for your tailoring needs. *edit* I stand corrected. It appears Top Shelf is no longer offering retail alterations: topshelfinc.com/other-services/. Bummer

I'm very happy with my Suit Supply Napoli cut in navy, but may consider their Mtm in the years to come.
I do like the idea of a British tan suit geared for the Summer, but it would see daylight only once or twice a year.

Ended up buying a navy suit, lighter weight wool from an Italian brand Eidos. I have wide shoulders from swimming and the Italians seem to be on the forefront of "soft" shoulders on the jacket (ie less padding). I tried the Hickey Freeman and BB, but in comparison, they made my shoulders look huge. Also, with BB, there's something a little weird about walking into a mall to buy a suit. Doesn't feel right. Anyway, getting it altered and will pick it up this Friday. Also helping the suit...as I was trying it on, two girls in their mid 20s walked by the mirror and said, "that suit looks really good on you." I accused the shopkeeper of buying them off, but he assured me they didn't work there.

Always thought they looked very sharp. i'll get one someday but I rarely wear suits nowadays so it'd be pointless right now.

So I’ve had to switch my spending to style myself for my upcoming nuptuals, which means missing out on things like the PBJ/BOW collab, which is okay since I’m already in a fade contest but damn they are beauties! Anyhoo, just got an email that the Black Lapel brand blue fresco wool suit fabric is back in stock so I think I’m gonna take a leap. Any good/bad stories dealing with this brand? blacklapel.com/shop/suits/light-blue-fine-stripe-fresco-custom-suit

K no response so maybe no one here has tried Black Lapel, but if you have I here there is a referral program. About to pull the trigger on my first suit from them so if any of you have bought a suit from them, you could “refer” me and we’d both get $50...lmk 🤙
