Autumn is my favorite time of year, and Halloween is one of my favorite parts of it. Mostly because that's when they start showing some of my favorite movies. Kicking back tonight with a couple beers and watching Night of the Living Dead, one of my faves...so what are some of yours?

The whole time of year is my favorite.

i'm not a huge horror fan, but there are a few films that have stuck over the years:
dawn of the dead (1978) - enjoyed the inherent social commentary nightmare on elm street - liked the dream vs reality aspect, and thought it was fairly scary when i originally saw it session 9 - kind of slow, but tense and plenty suspenseful the strangers - first movie in a long while that really creeped me out when i saw it

The Conjurring
It has to have some element of realism for me - anything too campy and I can't take it seriously. I'm curious by some of the ghost hunting shows and seeing some element of reality adds to the creepiness for me.

Hellraiser Jacob's Ladder The Thing The Evil Dead Martyrs Lake Mungo
Also really looking forward to seeing The Babadook this week, I've got high hopes for that.

Generally don't care for gorefest-style horror flicks (when it comes to blood and guts, the campier the better for me), but I'm down for a good creepy one from time to time. I am probably operating with a much looser definition of 'horror movie' than most people, but anyway, here goes. Jacob's Ladder (high five, julian) From Dusk Till Dawn The Sixth Sense Se7en (of all the movies I never want to see again, this is my favorite) Mulholland Drive The Bruce Campbell Classics (Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness)

funny...i didn't even think to add the evil dead series to the list. i think i subconsciously slipped them into a genre other than horror.

Thanks for the replies fellas! there are some mentioned that I haven't seen, and will make a point to watch this season. I'm with mattbert, in that I dig campy movies in general. I gravitate to the classics, like the original frankenstein, not the boris karloff one, though I dig that one too. All the dracula ,mummy, werewolf ones. Damn near any vincent price movie. christopher lee is also good. The exorcist,The Omen,The shining,Saw, Puppet master, I could go on and on and on. Alot of people like friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street...I do too, but only the first ones..after awhile they just got stupid with it.

This past week we saw "The Shining", "Psycho", and the original "Frankenstein" in the theater. Totally different experience, and I had never seen any of those on the big screen. Needless to say I loved the experience. All quite ahead of their time. Horror of the new variety started in the late 70's and early 80's. But like many things, they milked the formula too long and it got stupid with Friday the 13th, Part 27 - Jason kills his great grandkids...

i make it a point to see old hitchcock classics on the big screen whenever i can. rear window, psycho, vertigo, to catch a thief...etc...makes the experience so much better.

I don't think I need to say anything here, one of my favorite actors. Kinda off topic here, but Mattbert s' comment on campy...I love camp, and you guys can probably tell, I'm kinda campy myself But who doesn't love a Russ Meyer movie? Mudhoney is my favorite movie from Meyer

The F13 and NoEL franchises actually both turned a bit of a corner. Obviously the first ones were the best - and both then completely lost their way - but some of the latter editions weren't actually too bad.
It's interesting how some of the older classics hold up, or don't.
In the UK, The Exorcist was refused a classification on video for many years - thus effectively banning it here. It was still legal to show it in the cinema and in 1998 we went along to the 25th anniversary screenings. I'd seen the film on video back in 1982 (before our abysmal 1984 Video Recordings Act came to be) and found it a little unsettling... but seeing it in a modern cinema, 16 years later and in a completely different context of subsequent horror film, it was actually rendered a little embarrassing.
As if to highlight just how much things do move on, the BBFC granted The Exorcist an 18 certificate and it's now freely available here on DVD.
Quite why the BBFC even bothers to exist in the age of the internet is another question but it gives people jobs I guess.
That's one thing I really like about the US rating system, you can just put 'Unrated' on it and do whatever you want. The perfect compromise.

I'm slightly younger than you guys, so my absolute favorite "horror" movie is *CHILD'S PLAY*. After seeing that movie as a young 4yr olds lad, no other movie has scared me. At that age, nothing was scarier than a murderous toy... Not to mention my cousins had a "My Buddy" doll on standby to freak me out afterwards

With you there, the original Child's Play film is a classic horror.
Brad Dourif's voiceover for Chucky is perfection.

Their entire intent was to scare the piss out of me. After watching it, I was forced to go take a bath. After I got in the tub, someone reached in the bathroom, turned off the light and threw the My Buddy doll in to the tub with me... after a few seconds, the light comes back on, and Chucky is in the fcuking bathtub with me! I shat myself and fell and busted my head... GREAT TIMES AND GREAT MEMORIES!
