So I did a closet and dresser reorganization and took stock of what I have. 15 White TShirts/undershirt 25 colored or print TShirts 30+ Nice WorkShirts (not all would I wear to work, being to nice) 20 dress/button down shirts 7 pairs Chinos 5 pairs of jeans in rotation (the rest won't get any wear)
So my question is what's really needed? As in what amount makes a good wordrobe?

Next January get rid of or sell everything pointed the wrong way. Your pants don't seem excessive, though you seem to indicate more jeans than the five you've listed. That's a lot of tshirts but I'm not sure what to tell you about that.

That's a lot of tshirts but I'm not sure what to tell you about that. My wife made a comment about the amount of shirts. I realized that I wear most/all of them. 40% are winter (flannel, corduroy, wool) and 40% are summer (gingham, Chambray, light weight). Tshirts are simply a collection over the years.

There's no right or wrong answer to this. This is a borderline hobby for a lot of us as well. If you feel you have too much then get rid of what you don't wear.
This reminds me of an interesting documentary I saw on Netflix called "Minimalism: A documentary about the important things". I recommend watching it.

Just interested in the communities thoughts. One aspect of my supposed "one year no spend" that I've found. I get bored with the same shirts, jeans not so much. I wonder about those Heritage pieces that Grand Pappy wore. Did he ever get bored with the same clothing?

DigDug, your wardrobe seems reasonable and manageable. I think you have a decent variety, yet enough to keep things interesting. You should start a "general inventory" thread so we can see how much shit people here have. It would be funny.

I'm going to agree with ickes , as well. It is a bit of a hobby. Sure, we wear our stuff out of necessity. But, we are also collectors. Just today, I mentioned to another forum member, I got into this without knowing exactly where I was headed. I started buying a bunch of cool stuff. But, as it turned out, a bunch of that cool stuff wasn't cool enough, for me. I think, you almost have to go through an "accumulation" stage, to know what hits high up on your personal cool meter. I say, if you've got something you wear once or twice a month, it fits you well, and it suits your style, whether it's one of 3, or 1 of 30, it's not too much.

I think I have a problem... Your right where most of us were a couple years ago. The difference is a couple of years for you guys = less than 2 months for me, but I have a master plan. I'll wear wear 1 of each pair continuously until they're broken in. Then begin to wear the same brand new pair.

And I just found 7 pairs of half broken in jeans in my closet. Problem is you start to Break them in and you realize 3,4,5 months in, that they don't fit or they Don't break In (Damn BEAST!) so you give up on them. But 5 pairs at 4 months each = 2 and 1/2 years of wasted Denim wear.

Once you have a good broken in and faded pair, then start exploring others. Fit is King. Then fades

I don't get the doubling up on every pair but who am I to critique someone's purchasing habits. I'm definitely in no position to do so

Very interesting question... Depends on your motivation for keeping it all, and what you actually do with said clothes/wardrobe.
If I were to own 3 suits, that would be excessive... I rarely, IF EVER, wear a suit.
I've justified my wardrobe by not differentiating between work/play/nice clothes. I have 1 wardrobe, and I wear any piece at any time, and have figured out pretty much how to build different looks with the same clothes depending on what I'm doing for the day. So, having 20 IH shirts makes sense, to me at least. I get tons of wear out of (MOST OF) them.

I am definitely not a collector. I have expanded my wardrobe in the past few years, mostly because I now have summer clothes and winter clothes. Prior to that I just kinda wore whatever regardless of weather and was often either too cold or too warm. The line up I have now seems good for me. I wear most everything I have and I like most everything I have and don't feel like there is much missing in any one category. I never look at my clothes in the morning and think, "damn, I don't have anything to wear". I'm pretty hardcore on donating to Goodwill if there is something I haven't worn for a year. For the most part I'm at a point where I can do the one item comes in, one item goes out thing.
I'm not standing in my closet, but if I had to guess, here's my numbers: 3 pairs denim (heresy, I know) 8 pairs chinos (divided evenly between lighter weight twill and heavier canvas/wool) 3 pairs dress pants (light to medium weight wool) 15 dress shirts (mix of oxfords, poplin, chambray, etc in various weights depending on season...this is mostly what I wear to work) 4 work shirts (thicker shirts that I wouldn't wear to my office job, but wear on the weekend) 8 polo shirts (just worn in summer) 5 sweaters 10 T shirts (colored and/or print) 8 T shirts specifically worn as undershirts (I like ribbedTee brand) 5 pairs shorts one sweatpant, one sweatshirt, a hoodie, a few other random athletic type items I own one suit which I don't think I've worn for about 2 years (this is a little bit of a catch 22 for me...if I had a suit I liked, I might wear it more often, but how do I justify buying a new suit since I never wear one?) I also have a khaki blazer that I wear on the rare occasions I need a jacket and tie.
I don't think I will specifically do a one year no spend, but I think I'm at a decent equilibrium right now (unless of course the IH 170 becomes available on Rakuten...I already know the work shirt that will go to Goodwill in its place).

i've slowed my purchases down considerably. Haven't bought new jeans in awhile and don't need anymore for the foreseeable future. I do have quite a few jackets and have upped my flannel shirt collection, but even that has tapered off. Basically i'm just trying to wear and enjoy what I have instead of succumbing to sales. It's really not a tough choice for me -- I either put money aside so I can take care of my son, or waste a bunch of money on denim purchases that will wind up in my closet like all of my other stuff.

I dont know man. I have slowed buying down to good deals or interesting pieces. Less and less catches my eye lately but thats ok. In the meantime I do like variety and keeping things fresh so I will continue to buy and rotate things in and out.

Maybe railcar can do justice if I drop down again The Beasts WILL break in, but will require many times more wear than all the rest. The end result is a soft, but heavy pair. On a cold morning, they are a bit stiff, just like super heavy duck fabric does, but buy the time I make my espresso, the body heat renders them soft.

I think I have a problem... Your right where most of us were a couple years ago. I highly recommend the "old bull, young bull" approach. At your stage I think the tendency is to add quickly because something might not be available if you wait, or see something you think you just have to have. If you use discipline, you will save money from impulse buys, and not end up with stuff you don't wear much, or not at all. Pick wisely.
