Stepping out with the wife to a Semi Formal event (That means wearing a tie ickes). Any thoughts on drinks to order? Her usual is a Amaretto Sour. Something simple, not fruity, more on the tart side.

If you don't mind vodka... Cape Cod (vodka/cranberry) Greyhound (vodka/grapefruit) Sea Breeze (vodka/cranberry/grapefruit) I realize you wanted to stay away from "fruity" drinks. But, the cranberry, or grapefruit goes well with vodka, and they are certainly more tart than sweet. Edit: A rocks Margarita, with a good tequila has always served me well, too.

I'd even throw in a vodka gimlet. Classic and if the bartender is any good, they will do this drink justice (it's just vodka and lime juice, but the quality of the lime juice- ideally fresh - is key).

Whisk(e)y, rye or Scotch neat or with a splash of water.
A gin and tonic. A negroni.
Bourbon and bitter lemon.
And I nearly forgot.

How about an old fashioned? This is usually what I'm drinking when attending these sort of events. It's all SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS at the after party though.

Bartender didn't know how to make anything annoying. So Beer and Whisky sour it was.
