So, many of the Dr Martens are simply too far out of my wheelhouse. I don't want to look like some old, desperate rocker, if you know what I mean. I found a great pair of "Made In England" Percy MIE Oxfords in Harris Tweed. Haven't got them yet, but for a good deal, I had to try them. Will review 'em when I get them next week. Click pics to enlarge them...

These would look really good with denim. I was at the Nordstrom Rack last night (came away with another pair of Cole Haan wingtip boots) and noticed a ton of suede chukkas/shoes, etc. but what really caught my eye were a few that were tweed and/or other textured fabrics, some densely woven materials that look great dressed up or down.
This definitely fits the bill. Looking forward to your reviews.

I've never had a pair of shoes like these, and while I wanted some Doc's for a while, many are a little wild for my style. These look like great shoes for denims or ducks or canvas. And break-in is surely easy. Had to get the MIE as well as I hear those are still really good.

I have been a Dr. Marten wearer as long as I can remember. Boots and shoes. Mine are model 1461 made in UK. I have never had any problems with them and the soles are very comfortable. I rotate what I wear as I'm sure we all do and I will go from my white's Semi Dress to my Dr Martens and they feel so much lighter. I love how they look and can understand they're not for everyone. Even though I think anyone can wear them.

Mind sharing where you got the deal on the Harris Tweed pair? I was looking at some on 6pm.com, but then found the pair I wanted from a good seller on ebay for $30 less. Got them for $99 - free shipping. There are other models not made in England (MIE), so lookout for those. There are still some good deals to be found out there. Other colors too.

I've worn Docs for over 30 years. Love them, yes the ones at the Mall are crap. But these are the "For Life" ($150) you can return them for repair (they never do, just send you a new pair) for life ($25 handling fee). The leather is better, soft but can hold a shine with some work. Soles are a bit thicker (Not to thick like your on platforms). Great value for someone who stands/walks a lot. I'll be buying my boys some when there feet stop growing.

DigDug - Have you ever tried to see if you can get them re-soled with something other than the signature rubber sole? I was a huge fan of them in high school, but when I was in high school everyone was a huge fan of them. I didn't know they were still doing anything with a warranty on them, are the "for life" versions still made in the UK or did they also move those to China? I always loved the hell out of their black greasy leather.

If I remember right (it's been 3+years since I looked it up) there made in China (I made up for it though by getting a pair of Alden Indys and 2 pairs of American an made RedWings). I've never tryed to have them re-soled, I've read that it can't be done. The "For Life" are not the same as the "Made in England". I'm not sure which ones are a better boot (probably the MIE). But the "For Life" have a better warranty and are a better value, IMO (if your not put off by them being made in China).

I wore DM back in the early 80's and loved them. Not sure it is my style anymore. Btw, don't buy the Made in China crap and the quality is inferior. Those are made for the US market. People from outside of US get the one "Made in England".

Yeah... I really wish those old ones still fit, I'd have to get them re-soled with something like that Alden for JCrew commando. England ruined their manufacturing industry and then the United States followed suit. It's not that I hate China, I just hate that companies take advantage of what amounts to slave labor to increase profit margins while gutting their customer base's ability to buy their product because... heh. Stopping there cause I think I'm infringing on the rules if I go any further.

They were not as solid as the UK ones but I think in that price range they are a decent shoe. The UK made are hard to find now and expensive. Can get them on their web store though. A tip, Ebay is your friend. Some sellers don't realize that the good shape UK ones go for more. Just look at the pictures to find UK made. It says made in England on the bottom of the sole and inside the shoe. I don't think they make that many UK ones any more. I would think even in stores selling them outside of the US that most are Asian made.

I have worn Docs since I was a teen....that about 30 years. I no longer wear their shoes, but I do have a pair of 1460 boots on hand. I only wear them occasionally these days. I just can't seem to completely abandon them because they represent a part of my younger days I guess.

I see them at the mall all the time and DM should never make them in the first place. I don't know now but DM was considered as "value brand" in England back in my old days. I got more than 10 pairs and all of them were between 20-40pounds. Need to find some of my old "Boy London" tee shirts.

I swore you could still buy the England boots on Zappos and similar sites, but taking a look now is a bust. We came across a Dr. Martens shop in Paris 2 weeks ago and the lady picked herself up a pair of the English boots. They had a wider variety of boot styles, heights and color options (tonal vs contrast stitch) from the English line than I knew existed, but still LOADS of the largely cheaper standard (China) boots filling the store. I'm sure if we'd gone to a retailer that carried the brand, rather than the flagship store, it would have been a different story.
