I like your article, however, I disagree with your comment about tailors. In theory, a good tailor could make alterations to your denim to suit your needs, but the truth is, most traditional tailors lack the proper machinery to do alterations like chainstitch hems or darning. I will only send my jeans to someone who has the proper machinery and has the expertise to make alterations, like ABFits, RailCar Fine Goods, etc. I suppose a tailor could do a lockstitch hem but anything beyond that needs the proper equipment imo.

gaseousclay, there is a local Twin Cities denim repair/alteration shop called Science and Kindness (scienceandkindness@gmail.com) that has a union special chain stitch machine and a darner. They've tapered a leg for me too. The guy is really nice and used to work at Black Blue in St. Paul.

ive had 2 jeans and 2 shirts Butchered! By 4 different local tailors. I'll only send my denim out to Denim specialist for tailoring. That's a $600+ lesson on items I won't wear and wouldn't sell.

I've only had one pair of jeans hemmed at Black Blue and I think I paid $35. They did a good job. I wonder if Black Blue is just sending their stuff to their former employee?

My guess is yes, if you have Black Blue chainstitch a hem, it goes to Science and Kindness. I think if you buy a pair from them the hemming is gratis. I don't know what he charges for hemming - never had him do it, but he's pretty responsive on email. He charged me $20 to darn a couple of holes in a pair of old tellasons I have. Even did it while I waited...hung out in his apartment watching English League Football while he fixed my jeans. The darning thing is amazing. He has an instagram account that shows repairs of some pretty impressive crotch blow outs. www.instagram.com/scienceandkindness/

To the OP, I may be wrong but I always thought raw denim is about the wash, therefore, can be both sanforized and unsanforized. The way you described it in your article makes it sound like you're only talking about unsanforized denim which is denim in it's raw state. You'll also notice that a lot of companies sell raw denim, like Gustin, and list them that way. Or did I just read your article incorrectly?

Loomstate, raw, and unsanforized do tend to get confused from time to time.
Loomstate refers to the denim in it's most pure form.... Unsanforized and unsinged.
Unsanforized means the denim was not treated to minimize shrinkage.
Raw means the denim has not seen water, by way of a soak or wash. "One wash" isn't raw. If you bought a pair of raw jeans, got them home and did a soak, they are no longer raw. Got a pair of raw PBJ's and wore them for one year, and NOW you decide to wash them? They're no longer raw AFTER the wash.
