I have a pair of Brave Star 15.5 oz jeans that I've been wearing daily for 6 months, washed once. They are starting to tear at the fold of the cuff and I'd like to prevent that in the future. I'm all for character and unique wear but I'd prefer my jean to not tear just as they hit their stride. Any tips to prevent it from happening?

Uncuff your jeans at the end of the day and always cuff them slightly differently. The combination of stored dirt/repetitive stress caused this.

My local denim repair shop was able to darn them and they're back to normal. As far as preventing this, here's what I've heard (though I have no actual experience with this): 1) Keep the inside of your cuff clean. All the crap that collects in there rubs against the fabric. 2) Vary the site of the cuff. Every couple of days move the fold 1/8" or so up or down. 3) If all else fails embrace it (or buy 25 oz. denim)

Also... In my experience, darned (ie repaired) denim is stronger than the original material, so once you've fixed the cuff blow out, you shouldn't have to do it again.

If you cuff for every wear it will happen eventually regardless. Uncuffing and storing/hanging uncuffed will absolutely help (let's the dirt, leaves, pebbles, etc fall out). I went from wearing through the cuff in a few months to just under a year just by uncuffing each time. I've also found that a double cuff seems to not wear through like a single cuff.

Daily for 6 months months! Give them a break. If you did the same with a pair of shoes they'd be about ready to throw out.

Alternate cuffing and stacking, and brush off dirt on the days you stack. #firstworldproblems

In my experience. No, Nothing can be done to prevent it. agreed. I uncuff and get the dirt/dust bunnies out every once in awhile but have found that it's unavoidable. that's just the nature of cuffing and subjecting denim to repetitive wear/tear

The solution is hemming or learn to like the tears. I do a little of both.

I just clean and alternate with cuffing/stacking as well.

Agree on the clean and alternate cuffing/stacking approach. Most of my denim is hemmed to enable a "half-cuff" to one full cuff depending on how much stacking I want. On the full cuff denim, I tend to alternate between: or

I did notice a lot of dirt and stuff in the cuff when I finally washed them. Good tips, thanks!
