I'm gonna have to upgrade some furniture soon, namely a couch, so i'm curious what you guys use. I'm looking to get a leather couch at some point in the future but don't really want to get something cheap for the sake of being cheap. I've looked at Ikea's offerings but theirs do seem overpriced for what you're getting. I'm thinking i'd like to keep the price at $1000 or lower if possible, but I suspect most decent leather couches will be in the $1500-3000 range.
As for style, I saw a few through Room & Board and West Elm that looked decent but were over my price range. I want something modern and streamlined with Scandinavian styling. I could be persuaded to go for a basic fabric couch but I fear having a 3yo would make cleaning it a hassle. I don't want to pull a George Costanza and have to flip the couch cushion if my son happens to pee on it.
Any leads on quality, preferably US made couches?

WEll shipping will probably be cost prohibitive. But I have 2 couches from these guys, direct purchase model, I think some Amish workers. There ought to be a model like this somewhere near you. YOu pick the model, the cloth, the options and they make it for you. Obviously much easier going to a showroom to look through fabric books. norwalkfurniture.com/Look like they have a dealer in Modesto.

You have a young child, it's not a good idea to look at buying expensive furniture that will just cause you stress. Also, if you're not planning on being in that apartment for a long time, or think there's a possibility of moving a few times over the next couple years, moving can be hell on furniture. I'd recommend something easy to clean with some sort of stain guard, and reasonable quality -- with the understanding it's not the last couch you're going to buy, and likely something you'll be replacing within 3-5 years. A $3000 couch and a toddler just sounds like a recipe for disaster. I know most of us here are shooting for a "buy it once" ideal, I don't think that's going to serve you well in this situation.

Craigslist. I have purchased some great leather couches for the studio at 1/2 price of new. I love leather furniture. It holds up really well. The Ikea leather furniture seems kind of plain and not very comfortable.

We just got a room and board couch and they are nice. Almost all their stuff is USA made too I think. As a local twin citian, you could check out the room and board outlet. Its in Golden Valley. Theyre only open on weekends and competition can be pretty fierce, but you might get lucky.

Sadly, the other twin cities based furniture company, blu dot, is mostly made in Asia. They also have an outlet in NE Minneapolis though.

I have a sofa from Younger. It is well made (north Carolina iirc) and has held up very well. (Multiple dogs and a cat)

I like the look of Blu Dot's stuff but not their prices or that they're made overseas

I wasn't looking to spend $3k on a couch but more like $1000. I just don't want something cheap that will fall apart. I made that mistake when I let my ex pick out our furniture. She chose some cheap pleather couches that have basically disintegrated.

+1 for Room & Board furniture. We have several items that are 15+ years old with no issues whatsoever.

I'd encourage you to look around for manufacturers in your area. Room and board looks nice, but wow those prices.
I'm buying a locally made sofa and loveseat set for $1400. McM style, fabric, lifetime warranty.

Gotta a house full of R&B stuff. All of it's been great stuff. Movers like to complain about how solid it is. It even looks good in a muted indigo color scheme.
