Why do companies make arbitrary shoe sizes? Why do I buy Redwings a full size down, Wolverines and Chucks a half size down and tennis shoes as much as a size up? Here's a novel idea, size to Brannock, dumb shits.
Redwing knows that an 8.5 is really a 9.5 and it's not a UK thing. Just mark 4/20 as Coming Clean Day and add a one to all of your sizes. All companies should get on board. You own a Brannock, now make this shit make sense. I'm tired of using a decoder ring for every brand and then each last. Stop it!

Stop it! i'd tend to agree, but would rather convert to the seemingly more flexible euro sizing. i'd also like to mandate that anyone making 'one size fits all' socks immediately cease and desist, and that all vanity sizing be banished from the land (especially for 'measured' sizes like denim...a 32 should be roughly 32 and not possibly a 34 or 35)

Excellent point, vanity sizing is silly. RgT makes it really fun since the SK fit is one size larger than the Stanton fit. I have a 35.5 waist and wear a 33 Stanton and a 32 SK. If both were called a 35, life would be a lot easier.

Agreed on vanity sizing. I never understood why CF insists on calling a 35 actual a 32 label size, but sized to fit a 34. Just give me a 34.

I don't know, vanity sizing doesn't make sense, but does have a tendency to stroke the ego. With shoes it's a bit more complicated, since the last can make an 8 feel like a 9 depending on the shape of your foot. From what I hear half sizes aren't typically different from their non-halves, but I don't know enough to talk to that. On top of that, once you get into sneakers they're vanity sized the other way to make you think you have bigger feet.

I ate, back to not caring.
Euro sizing isn't any better. I'm a 42.5 and have things between 38 and 44.5.

I think you need to eat a snickers bar bentin If it's different feet, why do manufacturers list the correction needed? Ie, Redwing says to size down a full size, Rancourt a half, Alden either depending on the last. If you build a shoe, and it consistently fits differently than the listed size, why not change your sizing to match Brannock instead of just continuing to drive down the midnight highway with your lights off? Is it some sort of insider joke? Non of our shoes are the right size, isn't that funny?

This is exactly what I was thinking as I was about to pull the trigger on my Common Projects Original Achilles Low. I had to do an hour of research forum surfing to see what size worked for most people with similar sizing as me in other brands. It just doesn't need to be this way. Is your foot 10.5 inches long from heel to longest toe? Is it four inches wide at the ball and two inches wide at the heel? Then you are a size **. I know that this will not provide a super comfortable fit for everyone and that brands would fuss with arch placement, toe box height, heel box shaping, etc. As it is I went with a 43 = UK 9 = US 10 (I'm a 10.5 D/10 E on a Brannock) and my foot was sliding around a little due to the leather lining and the thin socks I was wearing, but I doubt I could have gone with a 42. So I'll have to figure out what to do to avoid getting blisters on my inside heel.

There used to be a time when the size printed on the shoe didn't matter . . . you went to the shoe store, tried pairs on until they fit correctly, and bought them regardless of what was printed on the inside.

Well thats why I vowed to only buy properly sized shoes. I can pull off some D's, but I'm finding out that not all lasts are created equal and that good fit is important. I just don't want to have to think about it and need them to fit. Way too much time spent on these clothes by trying to figure out if they fit. Post ALL the measurements you have, standardize them, and let the consumer buy with confidence. This cuts down on returns, bad ratings, overhead, and frustration on the consumer side. With such a large percentage of sales being conducted over the internet you would think it would be the norm to provide this information.
