The craft beer industry has exploded. Seems like every time i turn around a new one pops up. Must not be that difficult to start your own company these days There are plenty that aren't successful and you will never heard of. Best case you start shipping a ton of product and get bought by a bigger company.

I think Pliny is overrated and nope I do not wait in those crazy lines just to get some of that brew. But hey that's just me. I would love to trade for a 6 pack of porter or stout that I can't get here in the bay area or from Bev-Mo lol. Or someone would send it to me and I'll just pay for shipping/cost of 6 pack drewcandraw - you in SF? I'd make this happen, if you could snag a Rare Barrel or something, or even some blind pig (i'd take that over pliny - gasp ) Yea I can check the beer stores this weekend or so. Shoot me a pm and I can look for it for ya.

And about the time a brewery starts to deny the sellout rumors you can be sure there's going to be an acquisition announcement. Happened up here with Elysian and 10 Barrel in the past couple years and just recently with Cigar City too.

I've talked to the CEO of Woodchuck, Bret Williams, on multiple occasions about small breweries and also the guy from skinny girl cocktails about it.

For those of you within the Ballast Point distro footprint, I highly reccomend Sculpin and its variants (pineapple and grapefruit). They ain't cheap off the shelf, about $15 a sixer, but it's still cheaper than trading and easily competes with the more "rare" IPA's. Just had a couple Pineapple Sculpins last night and can hardly believe something so good is available at Trader Joe's.

I'm all for it as long as the quality doesn't slide with the increased production. Goose Island had great success maintaining a great product even with the increase in distribution so if the CCB sellout means cans of Hunahpu's at a bottle shop near me, that's a win for the consumer.

Ballast Point started distribution here in Minnesota about a year ago and I've been drinking it ever since. I keep expecting to get tired of it, but it hasn't happened yet. Other breweries are doing the citrus/IPA thing (Lagunitas, Deschutes, Surly a little bit at their brewery) but Ballast Point is the league leader in my opinion. Something about the hops and the fruit playing off each other...

Other than citrus IPAs, I really like the idea of taking other styles of beer and hopping the hell out of them, IPA-style. There are definitely some styles of beer that get out of whack when a bunch of hops are dumped into them, but I've had some Belgian IPAs and even a Saison IPA that was awesome. I wish more breweries did that kind of thing.
That being said, I am probably an outlier on how hoppy I like my beers.

Best case you start shipping a ton of product and get bought by a bigger company. i'm sure there are some that fail. Here in Minneapolis the craft brew industry has done well thanks to Surly. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry is starting their own company. One of the local breweries got their start by having another company produce their beer. I didn't know that was a thing but I'm guessing that so long as you have a decent beer recipe anything is possible. I was talking to one of the guys from a different brewery and he said it was pretty easy getting their stuff into bars and stores. He said the problem was keeping up with demand. It's good to have healthy competition among breweries but at the same time the saturation can be overwhelming.

Their footprint is now huge after the 1bil buyout - but yes, sculpin and its variants are terrific beer. Habenero too, if thats your thing

I think there was a pent up demand for craft brewing in Minnesota prior to passage of the "surly law" a few years ago that made craft brewing economically feasible in this state. As a result of that pent up demand, we're now riding what I assume is a craft brewing bubble that will probably tail off soon. That said, exploring these new tap rooms is great fun. I happen to live fairly close to NE Minneapolis where most of the brewing action is happening and every time I turn around a new brewery is opening. For you beer tourists, its a trip worth taking. In the summer.

some cool smaller breweries in the bay that I have tried are Heretic Brewery in Fairfield, CA and DustBowl in Modesto, CA.
Heretics list (http://hereticbrewing.com/beers) Dust Bowl list (http://www.dustbowlbrewing.com/menu/beer-menu/)
Heretics- i had a jalapeno fused beer a while back and their Torment Dust Bowl- they had a special porter which I got a growler last time I was there. My gf got me a son of wrath bottle last year for valentines day and I tried the Soul Crusher as well.

Dammit. You guys are gonna force me to drive to a real liquor store, aren't you? It's bad enough you're influencing my clothing budget, now you're getting into my beer as well? I'm in Colorado which is a bit of a hot-bed for micros.

Lucky for me, I'm on a no fun diet right now. No beer, no junk. Lost 17 pounds so far since the middle of January.

I made beer with bottled water once, never again!

Three Floyd's brewing is a place I'm thinking about driving out to. Zombie Dust is supposedly amazing. It is. Gumball head is fantastic as well.

I, like many I would think, would love to get my hands on some Tree House Brewing stuff. Specifically, breakfast blend, which I don't think is out at the moment. I've got a place by me called Kane Brewing Co, which is one of the best in NJ.
