Time to put my potato cam in its place.....
As I was taking a few pics with my cell phone, I realized I really could use a quality camera. Mind you, I'm no pro. I don't need thousands of dollars worth of equipment. But, I don't necessarily want to cheap out, either.
I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. Any recommendations ?
I do have a bit of interest in photography. As time goes on, I may very well want to upgrade. So, any more advanced recommendations are certainly appreciated.

I love my Canon T5. Great bang for your buck.

exophobe IIRC is very knowledgeable about SLRs. I'm all about the compact and mirrorless, which some may consider unfortunate -- whatever I can do to keep travel lighter, I try to do it. I've been a very happy user of the Sony NEX for some time now, and it offers interchangeable lenses.

I'm also not a snob by any means. Once you learn how to use focus and understand what situations work well for the camera, I fully support using the camera that you will most likely always have with you, which is your cell phone. If you're not intending to do anything other than view them on screens, for most people this is more than sufficient. Everyone is gonna buy a kitted out camera if they have money and a kid on the way, though (and end up using their cell phone by the time the kid is mobile). If you are buying a point-n-shoot or SLR of any sort, I do recommend one that is wi-fi or bluetooth connected at this point. Just make it as easy on yourself as possible, and you'll get the most enjoyment out of it. You can never go wrong with Nikon, lots of people swear by Canon, and I've never had anything but good experience with Sony digital cameras (stay in the mid to upper range of their pricing, though). If I were buying one today, my research would start with the Fujifilm Rangefinder style cameras, though.
