Alright, I'll come out and say it . . .
I've given it a couple of shots. A grey shirt from Gap, a blue J.Crew. I find it to be "meh" at best. Uncomfortable, stiff, and its seems too close to an awkward oxford/denim mashup. In addition, I have a difficult time matching it up with leg covering type garments. I've tried it, and can't say I i really like it.
Chambray dislikers unite!

Sounds like you haven't run into the right chambray shirt yet, and it is not all created equal, but I find it to be an awesome fabric if you find the right stuff.

So who makes the best Chambray? Why or what makes a good chambray?

I've actually stopped wearing Oxford since I've discovered the more beautiful and versitile world of chambray

It looks like they're finally getting through the Iron Heart Heavy Chambray, nobody has XL anymore. There's this thing at selfedge (it sells on Rakuten for $80 if anyone has them).

My first chambray (since the Lawless shirt I received wasn't chambray but actually that glorious double cloth that may or may not be something that got away from PBJ) is that periwinkle one making it's way through the Gustin process right now. I don't think it's supposed to ship until January, though.

FTR, both of my chambray shirts are of the single pocket button down shirt variety. Although the fabric is nice and thick, I've washed the grey Gap one a few times and it's still oddly stiff and doesn't drape very well. I think I'm just going to throw it in the washer/dryer every week and see if that loosens it up a bit. I liked the periwinkle G, but the odd sizing/fit and hit-and-miss construction is a deal breaker for me.

Add me to the list of chambray lovers. I have two. A red selvedge chambray from Taylor Stitch and a blue Japanese organic from Ratio clothing. I really like both. There does seem to be a great variation in fabric. The TS fabric is a little rougher and stiffer. The Ratio fabric is, dare I say it, buttery soft. The Ratio fabric is a little spendy, and I have touted Ratio Clothing elsewhere on this forum, but man, they make some great fitting shirts.

tangential to that - don't trust Independence's measurements. ordered a shirt from them a couple weeks back and it showed up 4" smaller across the chest than they spec'd. looking at this shirt, it's also measuring up larger than other specs.
