I've got plenty of The classic Worsted wool suits. Many of them I simply got at Marshall's. But im now bored with them. Some I've been wearing for 15+ years. So I've been going around looking at many of the suit suppliers. the chain stores (the ones that if you buy a shirt they give you 3 suits and 12 ties for free) and a couple local small shops. I've been asking if they have any Tweed suits.? After they look at me as if I have 3 heads they show me some same old Wool suit. Helloooo I asked for Tweed! Anyway, i quickly Googled Tweed suit and came across this www.studiosuits.com/suits/tweed_suitsAnyone know them? Or any other suggestions? (I'd like to keep it under $300) And what other fabrics may change it up? Tweed, cotton?

I think it depends what you mean by Tweed. Real Harris Tweed suits are probably going to cost upwards of $500 due to the labour-intensive fabrication of the basic materials. I think your link is showing Tweed-like suits. I know you're in the US, but I pass this shop every week and their prices are quite reasonable and they've a great choice. I've often been tempted. They sell worldwide and if they don't charge the 20% VAT the prices might be pretty good for what you get. There's also a UK start-up with a known TFL guy who's about to sell quality custom tweed suits, with a lot of guys from the US showing interest. My guess is that jbreitenbucher here knows everything there is to know about buying tweed in the US.

They've certainly got the variety side of tweed down, but I'd look for reviews and see if they're turning tweed into garbage. They're less expensive than Combatant Gentleman (which are good enough for inexpensive suits), and if not tweed, I'd think the corduroy would be right up your alley with your penchant for stripes and heavy fabrics.

I may not be the best judge. I've gone the route of buying the cloth directly from the Harris Tweed Hebrides mill and having a tailor turn it into what I want. This is not cheap. It has cost about $800-$1000 for a jacket and vest including the tailoring, cloth, and shipping for the cloth. I've looked at Walker Slater for my next purchase but have to do more research. I purchase Harris Tweed because of the sustainable production model and not all Tweed is Harris Tweed. I've also looked at www.murphyofireland.com and gotten some fabric samples and www.tweed-jacket.com/index.htmlI just haven't found any made in the US true Harris Tweed items unless you look at top of the line Brooks Brothers stuff.

Hey, jbreitenbucher, if there's anything I can help you with at Walker Slater, like pics or hands on critiques etc, just let me know. Like I say, I walk past their shops each week on our coffee trips and it's no trouble going in. My wife has a couple of their tweed coats and they pass my very snobby tests for quality, looks and value for money. I also have one of their tweed vests.

bentin I'm not sure anymore. I know that do some stuff at Southwicks, but I'm not sure how much and what. My tailor sends things to be cut and rough sewn at Southwick. It is damn hard to find someone that wants to actually do a truly bespoke jacket or pants in NE Ohio. GQ listed Cuffs and Christophier, Inc in the top ten for men's clothing stores, but neither does bespoke (at least not that I know). Davide Cotugno Executive Tailors does offer the bespoke route with multiple fittings but charges a little more than I wanted to spend since I was supplying the cloth.

One thing I'd love to know is when they tend to have sales. Any way to know where they are sourcing their Tweed from? I am trying very hard to talk my wife and daughter into visiting Harris and the mill when we take our trip to England and Scotland in summer 2018, but it takes so long to get to the island and there is nothing there except for the mill. Hard for that to compete with London and Edinburgh. I think the best I'll be able to do is to get them to let me go to Savile Row. I don't even think I can visit Lochcarron since it is in the middle of nowhere (relative to popular attractions).

Hit Nessy Land, go to the Isle of Skye, visit Talisker, then pop up to the Outer Hebrides.

jbreitenbucher, I don't know about sales, but can ask. I'd imagine immediately after Christmas, as a minimum, but in the UK sales prices often only apply to the sort of gear you wouldn't be seen dead in. If there's anything specific you're interested in in the sale I'll go in and ask on Sunday. I see from their website that US delivery is about $55, but they deduct VAT, so take one sixth off the price, which more than covers delivery. Their site says that their tweed comes from Harris, Shetland and the Scottish Borders. Again, if you need anything more specific, I can always go in and ask. By the way, the Walker Slater shops are on this street. The menswear one is the grey front towards the right. How quaint is that?

wdw I woul love to walk down a street like that every day. Back to DigDug's question. I also found some great items on Ebay. That was how I got started. I got my measurements nailed down in all the different methods people on Ebay use to measure sleeve length, shoulder width, chest, etc. and then started a custom search for Harris Tweed jackets and bespoke Harris Tweed jackets. I was able to get four for about $200. I would imagine that there are some suits as well, but I wasn't looking.

I would look at minimum JCrew or Brooks for suits. Hickey Freeman is my favorite besides my vintage ones. Half canvassed and all natural fibers would be my biggest points. Spend the coin on a good suit. The fused cheaper wools don't stand up. At least a full wool Tommy Hilfiger. Lots of people like Suit Supply but they don't work for me.

Yeah, the pants just didn't work for me when I tried them a few months back. But they are doing separates now, so I think I'll try them out again. Only thing is, right now it's really limited, to like pinstripe suits. Waiting for them to drop separates for just the standard solid light grey and navy suits.

I have not been in there for awhile but I actually need to go in soon since I've just been told I need a jacket for Thanksgiving. I could ask him, or you could call. It really is worth the trip to check the place out. It's a relatively new store, well he moved from his old location and built the place he's in now It's literally right down the street from my house, I could walk there in less than 5 minutes. Last time I was there he showed me his fitting rooms and the cloth room but I never inquired about price. I have always wanted to just walk in there and order up a couple suits and be done with it. Been reading on SF about suits lately and this article got me all interested in going back in there. www.artofmanliness.com/2010/02/12/the-art-of-manliness-suit-school-part-i-fused-vs-canvassed-suits/

Haha, I asked for fully hand canvased construction on my first custom suit from Savile Lane in Akron and they had no idea how to price it (ended up charging me $700). They outsourced somewhere in South Asia and I'm not sure the workers had any idea how to do it as it puckered when I had it pressed. That's a big part of why I switched to Cuffs and Cotugno. I'm thinking this is way off topic for DigDug

I'm sure there'll be a sale between now and Christmas. Here's a couple of me wearing their Crosby fit suits. They came out to be about $450 each suit after the 30% discount.

How do you like the Crosby?
I thought about ordering one of those as their other fit just seems absurd. I particularly don't like how there is barely a breast so the top of the torso's look like 1/3 shirt.
