I've started goodwilling anything I haven't worn in a few months. It took a lot of effort to lose some jackets and more classic things I could semi justify, but I've cut out nearly everything not in tge regular rotation. But it's awesome to open the closet/dig in the dresser and not have to move the fluff out of the way.

Selling stuff is great too. Not just donating.

Keeps it fresh, and gives people who don't have stupid money like many of us wearing nice gear too. You can even write it off on your taxes if you choose to do so.

Selling stuff is great too. Not just donating. One feels better - to me.

If it's something that doesn't work for sizing and I can't return, I'll look to sell it. I typically prefer the opportunity to donate. I only went against this strategy when I sold off my LD goods. I think that could be debated as a denim ethics issue, but that's another worry for another day.

But it's awesome to open the closet/dig in the dresser and not have to move the fluff out of the way. I did this the other day. I went through my closet and purged a bunch of stuff I don't wear and brought a box full to Goodwill. my approach has been to donate stuff I paid very little for and sell stuff that I spent good money for. I absolutely had to thin the herd for the sake of my tiny closet.

I find the problem is in finding that 13%. There is a lot of trial and error. Then when you find a piece that's in the 13% of what you like/wear, it's hard use it in to its fullest utility/work wear because you don't want to ruin a go to piece.

Seasonal for me. Every spring and fall. I've never sold any clothing. either offer it to friends or it goes to goodwill for a tax deduction.

This is true for me, im almost like "saving" the nice clothes for later and usually just grab a "just a f!@king tshirt" tshirt or the goodwear or a wellworn shirt.
Its usually the "nice" tshirts that gets worn least, like björn borg, hugo boss, armani or even the expensive marlboro ones. I use to go through my tees when I cant close the thing. So I lay away like 10-15 tshirts for 6 months and if I dont miss them they are off to africa or something, rinse and repeat every six month. The armanis I just said eff it im gonna paint and shit in them I payd top bucks for them. They have held up insanely good for like 10 years but are finally shredding, some paint dots still there.
Boxers and socks usually rip after a while so gets thrown away. Jeans get too smal, too ugly or shreds. Shirts shred. Even v-neck knits gets "garbagy" after too many washes and weares so off they go.
When I think about it, I also have some "wierd" shirts bought to use at parties, I think Rex would love one I have in offwhite/cream linen, with stripes, and almost slightly purply ever so thin velvet stripes sorta wriggling down, it doesnt show that much but its totally jimi hendrix up close! That one hasnt seen much wear lol!

Griffin - great point. I wish I could find it but I did read in some menswear publication about men not wearing their "good" or expensive items for whatever reason.
