So I've been at the Beach (CapeCod) for the past couple of days (celebrating my 24th anniversary:). I've noticed all the swim wear is made out of synthetic quick dry material. What was worn back in the day? I don't even remember what I wore as a kid. Canvas? Anyone know of something that would build character over the years?

Someone posted some pics of (I believe) som from Mr Freedom that were all indigo dyed with patch pockets, those are made of cotton. When I was a kid (80s) there was a lot of nylon and polyester, but it didn't look as nice as it does now. I've also heard good things about the longevity of Patagonia, but I don't know what they're made of. Canvas would be very prone to mildew if you were in a humid climate, and cotton twills won't dry out very fast, which is why the poly-blends have taken over that market. There are a couple "high-end" swimwear manufacturers that make classic designs, but I can't remember their names. These typically show up on Huckberry in the Spring.

I could go for a pair of the Mr Freedom's. But they may be to small after shrink. Would need a 37-38"

Honestly when it comes to swimwear I would stick with new stuff. Quick dry and prevents chafing

It's great to see how far fabric technology has come since ye olden days.

DigDug - Huckberry actually has a pretty good selection of stuff on sale (but not cheap by any means) now, but I don't see the brand I was thinking of, if I can remember or find it I'll share another link.

Orlebar Brown is the style I was thinking, but you're gonna hate the prices. Sunspel is similar and less expensive, but not enough to matter, and still more than enough to make you spit cereal. Similar stuff at lower prices would be great, but realistically, any swimwear these days is most likely to be made of some poly blend, and as brentkuz indicated, you'll appreciate it. I know how hard it is to find shorts that don't make you look like you're headed to a frat party, so I hope the more classic stuff can be found at reasonable prices.
