I realize there's a lot of folks on here from a lot of different places. And I know I can use Trip Advisor to find a lot of things to do in various cities - but I think it would be beneficial to use this thread as a "Selvedge Style Trip Advisor" - offer up some unique aspects of your respective cities. Shops worth checking out, must see places, activities to try, beers/hole in the wall places that aren't as common.
I'll let ickes and david2403 and Dirty_Denim share their perspectives on the desert as well, but here's some that I've experienced in my 18 months in Phoenix/Scottsdale:
Great places for denim:check out this place downtown called Lawless Denim
Still working on some great boutique-type denim shops.
Hiking/Biking/Being outside: There is an insane amount of trails and mountains here for everything outdoors. It's finally starting to get back to reasonable outdoor weather (if you get up early enough). I recommend the trails around McDowell Mountain. Lots of mileage to cover and enough to explore that you're not riding over people. Also worth checking out (if you mountain bike): The Desert Classic (and surrounding trails on South Mountain) and FINS North. DC is just south of the city, while FINS is out to the southwest in Goodyear.
Of course, if you're into baseball, it's hard to argue with Cactus League Spring Training. All over the valley.
Beer/Food: Lots of great craft beer options and not many that are promoted beyond the valley. A couple I'd recommend:
Wren House Brewing
Fate Brewing
Goldwater Brewing (new to Old Town Scottsdale, good people, nice scenery too)
Ingo's Tasty Food
Urban Taco
Lux Coffee
Check out:
Lost Leaf (promotes a lot of local music - free shows)
I'm sure there's a ton I'm missing, but that's the fun thing - we can add to this.
I'll probably post up some stuff on Raleigh and the Philly burbs eventually.
